Abstract

We examine the photon statistics of photon-subtracted thermal light with photon-number-resolving detection. We show the photon-number distribution transforming from a Bose-Einstein distribution to a Poisson distribution as the number of subtracted photon increases.

Photon-number-resolved detection of photon-subtracted thermal light

Yanhua Zhai, F. E. Becerra, Boris L. Glebov +7 more

We examine the photon statistics of photon-subtracted thermal light using photon-number-resolved detection. We demonstrate experimentally that the photon number distribution transforms from a Bose-Einstein distribution to a Poisson distribution as the number of subtracted photons increases. We also show that second- and higher-order photon correlation functions can be directly determined from the photon-number-resolved detection measurements of a single optical beam.

Multimode thermal states with multiphoton subtraction: Study of the photon-number distribution in the selected subsystem

Konstantin G. Katamadze, G. V. Avosopiants, Nadezhda A. Bogdanova +2 more

Thermal states of light are widely used in quantum optics due to their correlation properties. As is well known, their correlation properties and the photon-number distribution as a whole are strongly dependent on the mode number selected by the detection scheme. The same changes can be caused by photon subtraction. Therefore, we describe the general case of the multimode thermal state after a multiphoton subtraction, when the photon-number statistics is registered by the detector selecting a part of the initial modes. We present an analytical form of the obtained photon-number distribution and its general properties and check them in the experiment.

Non-Gaussianity of multiple photon-subtracted thermal states in terms of compound-Poisson photon number distribution parameters: theory and experiment

G. V. Avosopiants, Konstantin G. Katamadze, Yu. I. Bogdanov +2 more

Abstract The multiphoton-subtracted thermal states are an interesting example of quantum states of light which are both classical and non-Gaussian. All the properties of such states can be described by just two parameters of compound-Poisson photon number distribution. The non-Gaussianity dependence on these parameters is calculated numerically and analytically. The loss of non-Gaussianity during the optical damping is also studied experimentally.

Direct detection of super-thermal photon-number statistics in second-harmonic generation

Alessia Allevi, Maria Bondani

Changes in the statistical properties of light undergoing second-harmonic generation are investigated in the photon-number-resolving domain. We theoretically demonstrate that when a portion of multimode thermal light produced by parametric down-conversion is up-converted, both the second-harmonics and the residual beam at the fundamental wavelength are endowed with super-thermal photon-number distributions. The experimental results, which were obtained by exploiting the photo-number-resolving capability of hybrid photodetectors, are in excellent agreement with the theoretical expectations.

Statistics of photon-subtracted and photon-added states

Stephen Mark Barnett, Gergely Ferenczi, Claire R Gilson +1 more

A description of the photon statistics of photon-added and photon-subtracted states is presented. It is found that photon subtraction may increase the mean photon number or leave it unchanged, whereas photon addition may increase the mean photon number by more than the number of photons added.

Photon counting statistics—Undergraduate experiment

P. Koczyk, Piotr P. Wiewior, Czesław Radzewicz

A photon counting experiment for student physics laboratory is described. It is designed to illustrate the probabilistic nature of the photodetection process itself as well as statistical fluctuations of light. The setup enables the student to measure photon count distributions for both coherent and pseudothermal light sources yielding Poisson and Bose–Einstein distributions, respectively.
