Linear pulse propagation in stationary and nonstationary multilevel media in the transient regime

John N. Sweetser, Ian A. Walmsley

The effects of coherent propagation of an ultrashort pulse through an extended collection of multilevel systems is examined. It is found that the transmitted field shows significant deviation from both Beer’s law absorption and the conventional area theorem. In addition, when the system is in a nonstationary state it is found that additional frequencies can appear in the transmitted pulse spectrum. Such effects may be important in several areas of current interest, such as ultrafast pump–probe, coherent control, and inversionless amplification experiments in extended, multilevel media as well as in ultrafast-laser development.

Limitations of pump-probe femtosecond time-resolved experiments: Time-dependent absorption and dispersion line shapes

Benjamin Fain, S. H. Lin, Vadim Khidekel

In ultrashort (femtosecond) pump-probe spectroscopy, the pump pulse creates a nonstationary medium while the probe pulse propagates in such a medium. The analysis of this situation is performed in the framework of linear nonstationary optics. Constitutive equations and electrodynamics of the nonstationary media are analyzed. The propagation of the probe-pulse energy is characterized by the coarse-grained susceptibility introduced in the previous works of the authors [S. H. Lin and B. Fain, Chem. Phys. Lett. 157, 233 (1989); B. Fain, S. H. Lin, and N. Hamer, J. Chem. Phys. 91, 4485 (1989); B. Fain and S. H. Lin, Chem. Phys. 161, 515 (1992)]. The main objective of the paper is the derivation and analysis of the delay-time-dependent absorption and dispersion line shapes of the probe pulse. This line shape has a very specific form corresponding to phase-dependent Raman absorption (emission). The latter phenomenon is introduced and described in the present paper.

Nonstationary theory of polarized light pulse propagation through a four-level resonant medium with allowance for nonlinear complex refractive index of medium

G. G. Adonts, Mikayel Arzakantsyan

Nonstationary theory of polarized light pulse propagation through the medium with resonant transition 1/2 -1/2 is developed with taking into account complexity of the medium nonlinear refractive index. The theory is developed based on the irreducible tensor formalism which allows diagonalizing relaxations matrix and introducing effective decay times associated with the population relaxation, as well as relaxation of coherence between magnetic sublevels of the resonant system. It is shown that as a result of interference of magnetic sublevels in the polarized radiation field the inversionless amplification of radiation occurs due to optical pumping process. The dependence of inversionless amplification on the line broadening and resonance detuning is studied.
