Spin Waves in a One-Dimensional Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Akihide Oguchi, Yoshihiro Tsuchida

The one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet with 8=1/2 is treated with the use of the Fermi operators and an additional condition that the long-range order is absent. Our spin wave spectrum of a one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet without longrange order is expressed by andThis is in good agreement with the exact spin wave spectrum role =1!'/2lsin kl which is obtained by des Cloizeaux and Pearson at T=O.Correlation functions <S1S2> and <SlSs> are in good agreement with the exact value at T=O, also.Thermodynamic properties of this system agree with those of Bulaevskii and those of Katsura and Inawashiro. § I. Preroughening transitions in crystal surfaces and valence-bond phases in quantum spin chains

Marcel den Nijs, Koos Rommelse

We show that disordered flat phases in crystal surfaces are equivalent to valence-bond-type phases in integer and half-integer spin quantum chains. In the quantum spin representation the disordered flat phase represents a fluid-type phase with long-range antiferromagnetic spin order. This order is stabilized dynamically by the hopping of the particles and short-range spin-exchange interactions. The mass of N\'eel solitons is finite. Numerical finite-size-scaling results confirm this. We identify the order parameter of the valence-bond phase. The Haldane conjecture suggests a fundamental difference between half-integer and integer antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains. We find that disordered flat phases are realized in both cases, have exactly the same type of long-range antiferromagnetic spin order, and are stabilized by exactly the same mechanism. They differ only in the mathematical formulation of broken symmetry in the spin representation. We suggest experimental methods of observing disordered flat phases in crystal surfaces.

From deconfined spinons to coherent magnons in an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with long range interactions

Luhang Yang, Adrian E. Feiguin

We study the nature of the excitations of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg chain with staggered long range interactions using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method and by means of a multi-spinon approximation. The chain undergoes true symmetry breaking and develops long range order, transitioning from a gapless spin liquid to a gapless ordered AFM phase. The spin dynamic structure factor shows that the emergence of Néel order can be associated to the formation of bound states of spinons that become coherent magnons. The quasiparticle band leaks out from the two-spinon continuum that is pushed up to higher energies. Our physical picture is also supported by an analysis of the behavior of the excitations in real-time.
