Abstract

The nonlinear interaction of elliptically polarized counter-propagating waves in an isotropic transparent medium is analysed. Self-induced changes in the polarization of the counter-propagating light waves, are described. Using these results, a new type of modulator giving self-induced rotation of the polarization ellipse (SIRPE) is studied. The transmission of counter-propagating waves in the SIRPE modulator is shown to exhibit saturation with increase in light intensity and to be a multiple-valued function of the light intensity.

Polarization Dependence of Stimulated Rayleigh-Wing Scattering and the Optical-Frequency Kerr Effect

Rikon Chao, John Godine

A theoretical study of the polarization dependence of stimulated Rayleigh-wing scattering and the optical-frequency Kerr effect has been undertaken. When the incident light is circularly polarized, a striking difference in gain is found for the co- and counter-rotating senses of polarization of the scattered light---the former being suppressed and the latter being exceptionally favored. The analysis begins with a model for the Kerr effect, which involves the alignment of anisotropic molecules in an electric field, but the results can be immediately generalized to any light scattering process of tensor symmetry. The nonlinear problem of the propagation of an intense elliptically polarized light wave in a Kerr-active medium is shown to have a solution in which the vibrational ellipse undergoes self-precession and self-retardation. The stimulated scatterings or instabilities of such a self-precessing and self-retarding light wave are obtained for the backward and forward directions. Birefringence, optical activity, and linear and circular dichroisms are some of the phenomena which result, but the forward direction yields substantially different results from the backward direction because of Stokes-anti-Stokes coupling.

Nonlinear nonreciprocal effects in an isotropic medium for arbitrarily polarized opposite waves

I. A. Andronova, E A Kuvatova, Yu A Mamaev

A phenomenological analysis of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor of an isotropic medium is used to show the possibility of existence of nonreciprocal effects in the course of propagation of arbitrarily polarized opposite waves of the same intensity and frequency. A system for producing amplitude and phase nonreciprocal effects is discussed. The dependence of the effects on the polarizations (ellipticities and azimuths) and on the coefficients of nonlinear interaction between the opposite waves is analyzed for small amplitude and phase changes.

Modification of radiation polarisation due to propagation in a resonant medium

G. G. Adonts, D G Akopyan, K V Arutunyan

The optical-pumping theory of the passage of polarised radiation through a resonant medium was developed in the irreducible tensorial formalism. Transitions with arbitrary momenta J 1.2 are considered in the cubic approximation. For transitions with small values of momenta (J 1 =1 to J 2 =0; J 1 = 1 / 2 to J 2 = 1 / 2 ) the vector form of the equation system in density-matrix notation allows the problem to be solved exactly for light intensity. In the general case of an elliptically polarised wave, the equation systems for the interaction between circular components of polarisation of light in a resonant medium are obtained. Numerical calculations for deformation and rotation of the polarisation ellipse in a medium subject to saturation effects are also carried out. Irrespective of the initial state the polarisation tends either to a linear or to a circular form as it propagates, depending on times of collisional relaxation of orientation and alignment. The polarisation of linearly and circularly polarised waves does not change as the waves propagate, but the values of the saturation power for these polarisations differ considerably.

Pump polarization dependence of the optical Kerr gate with elliptically polarized probe light

Xiaofang Wang, Lihe Yan, Mengmeng Yue +1 more

Abstract Based on the light-induced polarization ellipse rotation effect, we propose an optical Kerr gate (OKG) in which elliptically polarized probe light is used by introducing a pair of crossed quarter-wave plates into the conventional OKG arrangement, placed just before and after the Kerr medium. Transient birefringence induced by the pump beam in the Kerr medium leads to a rotation of the polarization ellipse of the probe beam, hence part of the probe beam would pass through the OKG. Theoretical calculations and experimental results both indicate that the OKG signal intensity would reach the optimum value independent of the pump polarization direction when the probe beam is circularly polarized. This modified OKG measurement is suitable to detect the third-order nonlinearities induced in anisotropic materials.

Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation of elliptically polarized light

Andrey B. Matsko, Irina V. Novikova, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy +1 more

We predict theoretically and demonstrate experimentally an ellipticity-dependent nonlinear magneto-optic rotation of elliptically polarized light propagating in a medium with atomic coherence. We show that this effect results from hexadecapole and higher-order moments of the atomic coherence, and is associated with an enhancement of Kerr and higher-order nonlinearities accompanied by suppression of the other linear and nonlinear susceptibility terms of the medium. These nonlinearities might be useful for quantum signal processing. In particular, we report an observation of enhancement of the polarization rotation of elliptically polarized light resonant with the ${5S}_{1/2}F=\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{2}{5P}_{1/2}F=1$ transition of ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}.$

Electromagnetically induced transparency in the case of elliptic polarization of interacting fields

Oleg M. Parshkov

The theoretical investigation results of disintegration effect of elliptic polarized shot probe pulses of electromagnetically induced transparency in the counterintuitive superposed elliptic polarized control field and in weak probe field approximation are presented. It is shown that this disintegration occurs because the probe field in the medium is the sum of two normal modes, which correspond to elliptic polarized pulses with different speeds of propagation. The polarization ellipses of normal modes have equal eccentricities and mutually perpendicular major axes. Major axis of polarization ellipse of one normal mode is parallel to polarization ellipse major axis of control field, and electric vector of this mode rotates in the opposite direction, than electric vector of the control field. The electric vector other normal mode rotates in the same direction that the control field electric vector. The normal mode speed of the first type aforementioned is less than that of the second type. The polarization characteristics of the normal mode depend uniquely on the polarization characteristics of elliptic polarized control field and remain changeless in the propagation process. The theoretical investigation is performed for Λ-scheme of degenerated quantum transitions between 3P0, 3P10 and 3P2 energy levels of 208Pb isotope.
