All-optical switching in an open V-type atomic system

Hossein Jafarzadeh

Abstract In this paper, the optical bistability (OB) and absorption properties of a weak probe field in an open V-type three-level atomic system have been investigated. We found that the OB threshold could be reduced via spontaneously generated coherence (SGC), coherent and incoherent pump fields, atomic injection, and exit rates. We also found that the threshold intensity of OB in an open system was less than that in the closed system. The all-optical switching due to the OB has also been discussed.

Absorption-free superluminal light propagation in a V-type system

Kh. Saaidi, Bahareh Ruzbahani, S. W. Rabiei +1 more

Dispersion and absorption properties of a weak probe field in a three-level V-type atomic system is studied. By application of indirect incoherent pump fields the effect of populating upper levels on optical properties of the atomic medium in presence of a strong coherent pump field is investigated. It is shown that the slope of dispersion changes from positive to negative just by changing the intensity of the coherent or indirect incoherent pump fields. It is demonstrated that the absorption-free subluminal and superluminal light propagation appears in this system.

Coherent control of optical bistability in an open Λ-type three-level atomic system

Zhen Wang, Ai-Xi Chen, Yanfeng Bai +2 more

We analyze the hybrid absorptive-dispersive optical bistability (OB) behavior in an open Λ-type three-level atomic system by using a microwave field to drive the hyperfine transition between two lower states, along with the consideration of incoherent pumping and spontaneously generated coherence. Different from the closed system, we show that the bistable threshold intensity and related hysteresis loop can be controlled by adjusting the ratio between atomic injection and exit rates. More interestingly, the appearance and disappearance of OB can be transformed mutually by varying the relative phase of three coherent fields under the condition of a strong spontaneously generated coherence. The manipulation of OB behavior through the intensity of the microwave field and the atomic cooperation parameter is also analyzed.
