Quantum interference in Moessbauer resonance fluorescence

É. K. Sadykov, Аринин Виталий Валерьевич, L. L. Zakirov

We studied the resonance fluorescence of Moessbauer radiation of Fe57 nuclei with coherently coupled nuclear sublevels. The obtained results prove that the traditional Moessbauer spectroscopy in scattering geometry is effective enough for experimental investigation of the quantum interference of gamma transitions and for studying the coherencies induced by external radiation fields.

Photon statistics of light resonantly scattered from a three-level atom

R. M. Evans

A laser spectroscopy system and the equipment needed for resonance-fluorescence studies with the photon-burst method in an extended interaction region were developed. To accommodate the long, variable transit times of thermal atoms across this extended region a resettable coincidence counter was used; The photon statistics of light scattered from the three-level 5535 A transition in barium were investigated. These statistics agreed well with theory developed in conjunction with this work. An atomic branching ratio of 375 (+OR-) 30 was obtained from the photon number distributions, establishing a new method for determining this quantity. The affect of radiation pressure upon the photon-burst lineshapes was observed. Because of the large number of photons scattered high sensitivity was obtained, allowing measurements with fluxes of less than one atom/sec. The results of this work are important for the study of the hyperfine structure of atoms with short-lived nuclei and in searches for long-lived but exotic nuclei.

The Quantum Motion of the Nerve with a Local Defect

Miroslav Pardy

We consider the nerve as the elastic string, the left end of which is fixed at the beginning of the coordinate system, the right end is fixed at point l and mass m is fixed between the ends of the string. We determine the classical and the quantum vibration of such system. The quantum motion is obtained by the so-called non-conventional oscillator quantization method by author. The proposed model can be also related in the modified form to the problem of the Mossbauer effect, being the recoilless nuclear resonance fluorescence, which is the resonant and recoil-free emission and absorption of gamma radiation by atomic nuclei bound in a solid. (Mossbauer,1958). It is not excluded that our oscillator quantization of the string can be extended to generate the new way of the string theory of matter and physiology of nerves.
