Period tripling in the bilinear-biquadratic antiferromagneticS=1 chain

Abstract

We study numerically the elementary excitation spectrum of the most general isotropic spin-1 chain with bilinear-biquadratic nearest-neighbor coupling. Using finite-size scaling, a massless phase with a period tripling in the ground state is found to exist in an extended region around the Lai-Sutherland point. The location of the transition from the known valence-bond-like phase to the trimerized phase cannot, however, be given precisely. We also present results on the ground-state two-point correlation function.

Isotropic spin-1 chain with twisted boundary condition

Gábor Fáth, Jenő Sólyom

The possible ground states and the phase transitions of a spin-1 chain with bilinear-biquadratic exchange are studied numerically. In order to see better the real asymptotic behavior of the infinite system and to determine the necessary degeneracies, a twisted boundary condition is used that reduces the finite-size effects. This calculation confirms that a second-order Ising-type phase transition occurs at the Takhtajan-Babujian point from the dimerized phase to the singlet Haldane phase. The transition at the Lai-Sutherland point, to a massless phase with three soft modes, is found to be of Kosterlitz-Thouless type.

Monte Carlo study of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain with both bilinear and biquadratic exchange interactions

M. Uchinami

A Monte Carlo simulation study based on the heat-bath algorithm on a checkerboard arrangement is applied to the spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain model with both bilinear and biquadratic exchange interactions. Changing the parameter \ensuremath{\lambda} which denotes strength of the biquadratic interaction against the bilinear one from -1.0 to 2.0, we obtain the following results according to the measurements of energy and two-point correlation function. At \ensuremath{\lambda}=1 and -(1/3 where some physical quantities are derived rigorously, our Monte Carlo simulation results agree well with the rigorous ones. For ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}$\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{\lambda}\ensuremath{\le}${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{1}$ with taking 0.25\ensuremath{\le}${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}$\ensuremath{\le}0.5 and ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{1}$\ensuremath{\ge}2.0, its model has the gapless ground state accompanied by a power-law decaying correlation function. This implies the existence of a critical line. For -1.0${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}$, on the other hand, its model has the ground state with energy gap accompanied with exponentially decaying correlation function. This indicates that the valence-bond-solid (VBS) state asserted by Affleck et al. is stabilized there. As the point of \ensuremath{\lambda}=0 comes to the standard Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model and is in the region of -1.0${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}$, the Haldane's conjecture is supported that this ground state is described by the VBS state for the case of integer spin, e.g., S=1.

A study of the bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain using the valence-bond basis

K Chang, Ian K. Affleck, Geoffrey W. Hayden +1 more

An efficient valence-bond technique is introduced for the numerical study of singlet states of spin-1 antiferromagnetic chains and is applied to the general bilinear-biquadratic Hamiltonian. The results support the hypothesis that the gap first vanishes, with increasing biquadratic exchange, at the Bethe ansatz integrable point, which separates regular and dimerised regimes. The authors distinguish between real gaps and the mixing of degenerate ground states due to quantum tunnelling in small systems.

Gapless excitations in the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic chain

P Reed

The susceptibility and real part of the structure factor have been calculated for the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic chain using Trotter-Suzuki decomposition and transfer matrix methods. The results indicate an extended region around the Lai-Sutherland point where the excitations are gapless. This result is in agreement with direct diagonalization for small clusters but is in conflict with a recent spin-wave analysis.

A New Phase of theS=1 Bilinear-Biquadratic Chain: -a Trimerized State-

K. Nomura, Satoshi Takada

We investigate the S =1 bilinear-biquadratic model. In some region, the trimerized variational state is a good candidate for the ground state. This explains why the Sutherland model ( J 1 >0 and J 2 / J 1 =-1) has soft modes at q =0, ±2π/3. Moreover, the full phase diagram of this model is discussed. It is found that at the pure biquadratic ferromagnetic point, the ground state is extremely degenerate.

Phases of the Bilinear-biquadratic Spin-1 Chains

Juan Alberto Garcia

Measurements done on LiVGe2O6 by Millet et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 4176 (1999)] on phases of the Singlet ground state of the Spin-1 Chain can be described by the Bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain. I will discuss these results, among the results of others and talk about theoretical calculations done by A. Lauchli [Phys. Rev. B 74, 144426 (2006)] that describe the phase diagram of the bilinear-biquadratic model. At a particular point in the phase diagram the model becomes SU(3) globally symmetric and is known as the Lai-Sutherland model, it is Bethe ansatz solvable as shown in [A Schmitt et al., J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 29 (1996) 3951-3962]. Finally I will describe the thermodynamics of the model as where calculated by Lou et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 11 (2000)].
