Abstract

A scheme is proposed for the generation of motional Schr?dinger cat states with controllable relative phase of an ion trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential and driven resonantly by two laser beams propagating along the X and Y directions, respectively. The scheme can also be used to generate other cat states.

Preparation of superpositions of SU(2) coherent states of the motion of a trapped ion.

Shi‐Biao Zheng

A scheme is presented for the generation of superpositions of two two-mode SU(2) coherent states of the motion for a trapped ion. In the scheme an ion is trapped in a two-dimensional isotropic harmonic potential and driven by two resonant laser beams. Under certain conditions, the motional two-mode SU(2) cat state can be generated after a conditional measurement on the internal state following the ion-laser interaction.

Preparation of motional macroscopic quantum-interference states of a trapped ion

Shi‐Biao Zheng

We propose a scheme for generating macroscopic quantum-interference (Schr\"odinger-cat) states of the motion of a trapped ion. In the scheme, a trapped ion is driven by two laser beams tuned to the first lower and upper vibrational sidebands, respectively. Under certain conditions, the detection of the internal state of the ion leaves the vibrational motion in a coherent state superposition. The scheme can be easily generalized to prepare other kinds of cat states.

Vibrational pair cat states

Shih-Chuan Gou, Jörg Steinbach, P. L. Knight

We propose a scheme for generating mesoscopic superpositions of two distinguishable pair coherent states of motion in a two-dimensional ion trap. In our scheme, the trapped ion is excited bichromatically by five laser beams along different directions in the X-Y plane of the ion trap. Four of these have the same frequency and can be derived from the same source, reducing the demands on the experimentalist. We show that if the initial vibrational state is given by a two-mode Fock state, as demonstrated in recent experiments, these highly correlated two-mode ``Schr\"odinger cat'' states are realized when the system reaches its steady state, which is indicated by the extinction of the fluorescence emitted by the ion. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Generation of motional pair coherent states in an anisotropic ion trap

Shi‐Biao Zheng

A scheme is proposed for generating motional pair coherent states of an ion in a two-dimensional anisotropic trap. In the scheme the ion is excited by two laser beams in the x - y plane. Under certain conditions, the system finally reaches the steady state given by the product of the ground electronic state with the motional pair coherent state. The scheme can be generalized to prepare pair cat states and two-mode SU (1,1) intelligent states in a two-dimensional anisotropic trap.

Generation of Multicomponent Motional Coherent and Squeezed Coherent States of N Trapped Ions by a Dispersive Interaction

Wen‐Xing Yang, Jiahua Li, Jin Li-Xia +1 more

Following the recent proposal by Solano E et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 060402] a procedure is proposed to generate arbitrary discrete multicomponent motional coherent and squeezed coherent states of N trapped ions by additionally using a dispersive bichromatic interaction in a long-living and fast way. In this procedure, two lasers in the Raman configuration are tuned quasiresonant and resonant with N two-level ions under different conditions, respectively. Furthermore, we show how the idea can be used for the generation of two-mode SU(2) Schrödinger cat states for the vibrational motion of a single ion trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential.
