Abstract

Expressions describing the asymptotic (as a function of the order n ) damping of multispin multiquantum coherences in systems with an infinite-range interaction (van der Waals model) have been obtained. The results coincide with the results of the numerical experiment for nanocavities.

Long-range order in the spin van der Waals model

M. Howard Lee

Long-range order in the spin van der Waals model is considered when the number of spins is finite and also when infinite. We show explicitly that a finite system cannot support long-range order. An infinite system at high temperatures is found to be dominated by the entropy of degenerate states of the system and, as a result, the system behaves essentially like an ideal system. In an infinite system at low temperatures, long-range order exists, fully reflecting the spin symmetry of the Hamiltonian. For the XY-like regime (J≳Jz ), mx is finite but mz vanishes, where mx and mz are reduced order parameters for the transverse and longitudinal directions, respectively. For the Ising-like regime (J<Jz), mx vanishes but mz is finite. The isotropic interaction (Jz = J) behaves as a singularity and it must be considered separately. A physical interpretation of the behavior of long-range order is offered using the geometry of spin space.

Nonpermuting zero-damping and infinite-system limits in an exactly solvable model of a particle interacting with a field

H. Dekker

The quantum mechanics of an oscillator interacting with a field in the limit of zero damping (\ensuremath{\lambda}+0) and infinite field extension (\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}) depends on the order in which the limits are taken. If the limit \ensuremath{\lambda}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0 is taken after the limit \ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}, one obtains Gaussian wave functions for all stationary states (m=0,1,2,. . .) of the particle. These Gaussians do have the correct standard values for the variances 〈${\ensuremath{\zeta}}^{2}$${〉}_{n}$ but otherwise obviously differ from the standard harmonic-oscillator result. The latter arises only if the zero-damping limit is taken before the infinite-system limit.

Exact solutions and quantum defect theory for van der Waals potentials in ultracold molecular systems

Jianwen Jie, Shiyou Chen, Yue Chen +1 more

Abstract In this paper, we have provided exact two-body solutions to the 2D and 3D Schrödinger equations with isotropic van der Waals potentials of the form ± 1 / r 6 . Based on these solutions, we developed an analytical quantum defect theory (QDT) applicable to both quasi-2D and 3D geometries, and applied it to study the scattering properties and bound-state spectra of ultracold polar molecules confined in these geometries. Interestingly, we find that in the attractive (repulsive) van der Waals potential case, the short-range interaction can be effectively modeled by an infinite square barrier (finite square well), which leads to narrow and dense (broad and sparse) resonance structures in the quantum defect parameter. In the quasi-2D attractive case, shape resonances can appear in an ordered fashion across different partial waves, characterized by sharp phase jumps as the scattering energy is varied. Furthermore, the low-energy analytical expansions derived from QDT show excellent agreement with the exact numerical results, validating the accuracy and usefulness of our analytical approach in describing two-body physics governed by long-range van der Waals interactions.

Trigonometric models for scaling behavior near criticality

Michael Ellis Fisher, Shun-yong Zinn, Paul J. Upton

Parametric scaling representations of the asymptotic equation of state, correlation lengths, and singular part of the Helmholtz free energy in the critical region of a system with a scalar order parameter are considered with the aim of fitting all 15 available independent universal amplitude ratios and describing naturally van der Waals loops. Defects in previous linear and cubic models and their extensions are described: they cannot represent analytically connected van der Waals loops or approximate satisfactorily all the known amplitude ratios. However, novel trigonometric parametric models for the free energy (and correlations) meet all the desiderata as demonstrated by the explicit numerical data presented.
