Abstract

Using the variational block-spin approximation of Kadanoff (1975) a renormalization group recursion relation suitable for two-layered Ising systems is constructed. The critical behaviour of the Ashkin-Teller model is described in some detail.

Two-layered Ising model with short-range two-spin interactions showing the critical behaviour of the Ashkin-Teller model

K Jungling

A two-layered Ising model is presented which maps to the Ashkin-Teller (AT) model (1943) for certain ratios of the two-spin couplings. Thus the model is able to exhibit the same critical exponents as the AT model, which are in general different from the usual Ising exponents; even continuous dependence of the critical exponents on the energy parameters is to be expected.

Renormalisation group recursion relations using the application of generalised Callen identities to the Ashkin-Teller model

Noureddine Benayad, A. Benyoussef, N. Boccara +1 more

Using generalised Callen identities a sequence of appropriate renormalisation group recursion relations for Ising models are derived. They are simple to obtain and give very satisfactory results for critical and non-critical physical quantities. The technique is then used to derive the phase diagram and to study the critical properties of the Ashkin-Teller model.

Universality and non-universality in the Ashkin-Teller model

Alessandro Giuliani

The Ashkin-Teller model can be formulated as a pair of 2D Ising models, interacting via a four-spin interaction. I consider the case of weak anisotropy (slight a-symmetry between the two Ising layers) and weak coupling. I show that the system admits two critical temperatures whose difference varies continuously with the strength of the coupling, scaling with an anomalous exponent as one let the a-symmetry parameter go to zero. The specific heat diverges logarithmically at the critical points (as for Ising) but the constant in front of the logarithm is renormalized by an anomalous critical exponent. The logarithmic divergence of the specific heat dominates only in an exponentially small interval around the critical temperatures and outside it is modified into an anomalous power law behaviour. The proof is based on an exact mapping of Ashkin-Teller into a model of (1+1)D interacting fermions and on the implementation of constructive Renormalization group methods on the fermionic system. This PhD thesis includes: (1) a review of the exact solution of 2D Ising in terms of Grassmann functional integrals; (2) a review of the Grassmann representation for a class of interacting Ising models, including Ashkin-Teller and the 8 vertex model; (3) a detailed discussion of the multiscale analysis of the Ashkin-Teller model, based on fermionic Renormalization Group methods, including the study of the flow of the effective coupling constants (in particular a proof of vanishing of the beta function for this and similar Luttinger-like models, based on modified approximate Ward identities, is included). Renormalization-group study of the Ashkin-Teller-Potts model in two dimensions

Chandan Dasgupta

The critical behavior of the $s$-state Ashkin-Teller-Potts model on a square lattice is studied for $s=3, 4, \mathrm{and} 5$, using a variational renormalization-group transformation of the type introduced by Kadanoff. For the $s=3$ and $s=4$ models, the transformation correctly predicts a continuous phase transition. The calculated values of the critical exponents and the transition temperature are consistent with the results obtained from other approaches. For $s=5$, however, the transformation fails to detect the first-order transition that is known to occur.

Variational Principles and Approximate Renormalization Group Calculations

Leo P. Kadanoff

Approximate recursion relations which give upper and lower bounds on the free energy are described. "Optimal" calculations of the free energy can then be obtained by treating parameters within the renormalization equations variationally. As an example, simple lower-bound relations are defined for the two- and three-dimensional Ising models. At the fixed point, a parameter is set variationally, and then critical indices are calculated.

Spin-3/2 Ising Model and Ashkin-Teller Model

Tomoya Horiguchi, Yasushi Honda

We derive a relation between a general spin-3/2 Ising model and an Ising model with two sets of Ising spins. A spin-3/2 Ising model with up-down symmetry is expressed in terms of an Ashkin-Teller model and solved exactly in some cases without assuming extended Horiguchi's condition. It turns out that the system on the square lattice shows rich critical phenomena.
