Coherent-Anomaly Analysis with Cluster Variation Method for Two-Dimensional Ising Model with Nearest-Neighbor and Next-Nearest-Neighbor Interactions

Kazuyuki Tanaka, Tsuyoshi Horiguchi, Tohru Morita

The spin-pair correlation functions in the Ising model with nearest-neighbor interaction J>0 and next-nearest-neighbor interaction J′ on the square lattice are obtained in three approximations of the simplified cluster variation method. We estimate the critical indices ην, γ and ν, by applying the coherent-anomaly method to the obtained spin-pair correlation functions. We conclude that the system belongs to the Onsager universality class when J′/J > −0.5 and does not when J′/J < −0.5.

Exact correlation functions of Bethe lattice spin models in external magnetic fields

Chin‐Kun Hu, N. Sh. Izmailian

We develop a transfer matrix method to compute exactly the spin-spin correlation functions $〈{s}_{0}{s}_{n}〉$ of Bethe lattice spin models in the external magnetic field $h$ and for any temperature $T.$ We first compute $〈{s}_{0}{s}_{n}〉$ for the most general spin-$S$ Ising model, which contains all possible single-ion and nearest-neighbor pair interactions. This general spin-$S$ Ising model includes the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ simple Ising model and the Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) model as special cases. From the spin-spin correlation functions, we obtain functions of correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}(T,h)$ for the simple Ising model and BEG model, which show interesting scaling and divergent behavior as $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{h}0$ and $T$ approaches the critical temperature ${T}_{c}.$ Our method to compute exact spin-spin correlation functions may be applied to other Ising-type models on Bethe and Bethe-like lattices.

Partial Test of the Universality Hypothesis: The Case of Next-Nearest-Neighbor Interactions

Gerald Paul, Eugene Stanley

High-temperature series expansions are used to examine the dependence of critical-point exponents upon the presence of second-neighbor interactions. We consider the Hamiltonian ${\mathcal{H}}_{\mathrm{nnn}}=\ensuremath{-}{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\Sigma}\stackrel{\mathrm{nn}}{〈\mathrm{ij}〉}{\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{S}}}_{i}^{(D)}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{S}}}_{j}^{(D)}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}\ensuremath{\Sigma}\stackrel{\mathrm{nnn}}{〈\mathrm{ij}〉}{\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{S}}}_{i}^{(D)}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{S}}}_{j}^{(D)},$ where the first and second sums are over pairs of nearest-neighbor (nn) and next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) sites, and where the spins ${\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{S}}}^{(D)}$ are $D$-dimensional unit vectors. The two-spin correlation function, ${C}_{2}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}})$, is calculated to tenth, ninth, and eighth order in $\frac{1}{{k}_{B}T}$ for the Ising ($D=1$), classical-planar ($D=2$), and classical-Heisenberg ($D=3$) models, respectively, for various values of the parameter ${R}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\equiv}\frac{{J}_{2}}{{J}_{1}}$ and for various cubic lattices (fcc, bcc, and sample cubic). These represent the first series expansions of the spin correlation function for nnn interactions. From ${C}_{2}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}})$ we obtain series for the specific heat, susceptibility, and second moment. Analysis of these series and detailed comparisons with the exactly soluble spherical model ($D=\ensuremath{\infty}$) lead us to conclude that the exponents $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ (susceptibility) and $\ensuremath{\nu}$ (correlation length) may be independent of ${R}^{\ensuremath{'}}$; this suggestion is consistent with the universality hypothesis.

We develop a transfer matrix method to compute exactly the spin-spin correlation functions 〈s0sn〉〈{s}_{0}{s}_{n}〉〈s0sn〉 of Bethe lattice spin models in the external magnetic field hhh and for any temperature T.T.T. We first compute 〈s0sn〉〈{s}_{0}{s}_{n}〉〈s0sn〉 for the most general spin-SSS Ising model, which contains all possible single-ion and nearest-neighbor pair interactions. This general spin-SSS Ising model includes the spin-12\frac{1}{2}21 simple Ising model and the Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) model as special cases. From the spin-spin correlation functions, we obtain functions of correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}(T,h)$ for the simple Ising model and BEG model, which show interesting scaling and divergent behavior as $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{h}0$ and TTT approaches the critical temperature Tc.{T}_{c}.Tc.
