Long-distance test of Bell's inequality in 1550 nm band using polarisation entanglement

Abstract

A report is presented of observed violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, a particular form of Bell's inequality, in polarisation-entangled photon pairs in the 1550 nm band. Accidental coincidences were included as detected in the S value evaluation of the CHSH inequality. A 10.5 km fibre was used as a quantum channel.

Violation of Bell's Inequality in 1550 nm Band without Subtraction of Accidental Coincidences

Akio Yoshizawa, Hidemi Tsuchida

A violation of Bell's inequalities using quantum entanglement indicates the nonlocality of two particles such as photons and electrons. We observe a violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, a particular Bell's inequality, in polarization-entangled photon pairs in the 1550 nm band. For photon pair generation based on spontaneous parametric down conversion, a fiber-optic two-photon interferometer with two periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides is adopted. The obtained S value of the CHSH inequality is 2.44 ±0.02 without subtraction of accidental coincidences, yielding a violation by ∼22 standard deviations in an hour. Two-photon interference with a visibility of 0.885 is also observed. If those coincidences are subtracted, the visibility becomes almost unity.

Testing the Bell inequality on frequency-bin entangled photon pairs using time-resolved detection

Xianxin Guo, Yefeng Mei, Shengwang Du

Entanglement, describing the inseparability of a quantum multiparty system, is one of the most intriguing features of quantum mechanics. Violation of Bell inequality, for ruling out the possibility of local hidden variable theories, is commonly used as a strong witness for quantum entanglement. In previous Bell test experiments with photonic entanglement based on two-photon coincidence measurement, the photon temporal wave packets are absorbed completely by the detectors. That is, the photon coherence time is much shorter than the detection time window. Here we demonstrate generation of frequency-bin entangled narrowband biphotons, and for the first time, test the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell inequality |S|<= 2 for their nonlocal temporal correlations with time-resolved detection. We obtain a maximum |S| value of 2.52+/-0.48 that violates the CHSH inequality. Our result will have applications in quantum information processing involving time-frequency entanglement.

Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell-inequality Violability with the Full Poincaré-Bloch Sphere

Carlos Cardoso-Isidoro, Enrique J. Galvez

Linearly polarized projections are the tacit means for performing Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell-inequality tests using polarization-entangled photon pairs. The inequality is valid for all states on the Poincaré-Bloch sphere, but few laboratory studies have investigated violations with the full sphere. In this article, we explore the experimental verifications of the predicted violations of the CHSH inequality with Bell and non-Bell states with same and different linear and elliptically polarized basis states for each photon. We find that Bell states violate CHSH when using the same basis for both photons, regardless of their ellipticity, whereas they show no violations for photon projections in different bases. We found non-Bell maximally-entangled states for which the converse is true.

Polarization-entangled photon pairs using spontaneous four-wave mixing in a fiber loop

A. J. Almeida, S. R. M. Carneiro, N. A. Silva +2 more

We generate polarization-entangled photon pairs in the 1550-nm wavelength telecom band, using spontaneous four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber loop. With accidental coincidences subtracted, we obtain coincidence fringes with visibilities greater than 86%, and thus observe a violation of Clauser, Horne, Shimony and Holt (CHSH) inequality by 2.7 standard deviations. The experimental setup is built using only fiber connections, which contribute to its long time stability.

Experimental Bell-inequality violation without the postselection loophole

G. Lima, Giuseppe Vallone, Andrea Chiuri +2 more

We report on an experimental violation of the Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (Bell-CHSH) inequality using energy-time-entangled photons. The experiment is not free of the locality and detection loopholes but is the first violation of the Bell-CHSH inequality using energy-time entangled photons which is free of the postselection loophole described by Aerts et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 2872 (1999)].
