Abstract

The possibility of stable faster-than-light propagation of ultimately short (without high-frequency carrier) electromagnetic solitons, breathers, and nonresonant envelope solitons is discussed based on the simple model of two-component nonequilibrium media undergoing two-level quantum transitions with widely differing eigenfrequencies.

Faster-than-light propagation of electromagnetic solitons in nonequilibrium medium taking account of diffraction

A. N. Bugay, С. В. Сазонов

In this work the faster-than-light propagation taking account of diffraction of ultimately short electromagnetic video solitons and envelope solitons in a bicomponent nonequilibrium medium undergoing two-level quantum transitions with widely differing eigenfrequencies is examined. The conditions of stable propagation with respect to self-focusing are determined.

On superluminal pulses in nonequilibrium media

A. N. Bugay, Sergey Vladimirovich Sazonov

The propagation and transverse dynamics of extremely short pulses in a nonequilibrium medium consisting of two-level atoms has been investigated. It is shown that, if the spectrum of such pulses does not overlap the characteristic frequency of quantum transitions, non-1D superluminal pulses with retained shape may exist.

Extremely short and quasi-monochromatic electromagnetic solitons in a two-component medium

С. В. Сазонов

The propagation of extremely short (without high-frequency filling) pulses and nonresonant envelope solitons in a two-component medium comprising two-level atoms with substantially different quantum transition frequencies was studied. The dynamics of a pulse whose reciprocal time scale lay between these frequencies was shown to be described by the Kosevich-Kovalev equation, the one-way variant of which was the Konno-Kameyama-Sanuki equation. If the transition dipole moments of medium components were equal, the one-way equation became integrable. Soliton and soliton-like solutions to these equations were used to analyze pulse propagation regimes at various two-component medium initial states. The stability of these localized wave formations was analyzed. The possible existence of stable soliton-like pulses propagating in a nonequilibrium medium at group velocities exceeding the velocity of light in vacuum was discussed.

Rogue wave triggered at a critical frequency of a nonlinear resonant medium

Jingsong He, Shuwei Xu, Kuppusamy Porsezian +2 more

We consider a two-level atomic system interacting with an electromagnetic field controlled in amplitude and frequency by a high intensity laser. We show that the amplitude of the induced electric field admits an envelope profile corresponding to a breather soliton. We demonstrate that this soliton can propagate with any frequency shift with respect to that of the control laser, except a critical frequency, at which the system undergoes a structural discontinuity that transforms the breather in a rogue wave. A mechanism of generation of rogue waves by means of an intense laser field is thus revealed.
