Theory of two-photon double-beam optical bistability

Govind Prasad Agrawal, Christos Flytzanis

Transmission characteristics of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer with two independent optical beams are considered under steady-state conditions. The sum frequency of two beams is taken to be near a two-photon resonance of the nonlinear medium. Two beams are coupled through the intensity-dependent susceptibility and influence propagation of each other in a mutual way. A set of two coupled-state equations is derived and it incorporates saturated absorption and dispersion as well as the effect of optical Stark shift. The system is found to have as many as seven stationary states, and at most, three are stable among them. The degenerate case of a single beam in two-photon resonance with the medium is also considered with particular emphasis on the effect of the optical Stark shift on optical bistability.

Quantum computing based on one-photon polarisation states of light pulses propagating in a doped resonance medium

Alexei V. Prokhorov, A. P. Alodjants, Sergei M Arakelyan

The propagation of one-photon light pulses in optical media doped with rare-earth atoms is considered under conditions close to the atomic optical resonance. The four-beam polarisation interaction M-scheme with two probe pulses and two pump pulses is analysed. The regimes of induced cross-interaction between probe optical pulses are studied and the conditions are found for controlling efficiently their group velocities in the medium, which is determined by the tunings of the atomic optical resonance. An algorithm is proposed for quantum information processing by coding and controlling the time delays of one-photon light pulses in this system.

Correlation of light beams in a transparent medium with cubic nonlinearity and their amplification

В. Н. Горбачев, Andrew I. Trubilko

Propagation of two waves in a transparent one-dimensional medium with cubic nonlinearity is analyzed. Correlation between the two beams develops, which periodically changes with the length of a medium and is quantum or classical in nature. Mutual correlation between the waves in this medium may be enhanced without destruction in the resonant one-photon amplification process.
