Optimized shaping of isolated pulses in Brillouin fiber slow-light systems

Sanghoon Chin, Luc Thévenaz A

The effect of a proper shaping of the temporal envelope of isolated pulses in slow-light systems based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers is studied and experimentally demonstrated. The pulse shape can be optimized to lead to a substantial enhancement of the delaying effect. The spectrum of the optical pulses is engineered so that the spectral width of the pulse is minimized while preserving the pulse duration, making possible to match at best the Brillouin spectrum. Exponentially shaped pulses show the minimal FWHM spectral width and experience the largest time delay when compared to Gaussian or rectangular pulses.

Optimisation of optical signal delay in slow-light systems based on stimulated brillouin scattering

Ronny Henker, Thomas Schneider, Andrzej Wiatrek +4 more

Different Slow-light systems have been discussed and developed as a powerful tool to reduce the group velocity of optical signals during the last years. It has enjoyed much recent interest because of the potential system applications in optical telecommunication and information systems. Especially the nonlinear effect of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has become important for fiber based Slow-light systems. But, the SBS also has two challenges. First, the maximum time delay is limited due to the saturation of the Brillouin amplification process and second, the delay of the pulses is accompanied by pulse distortions (pulse shape broadening). For these aspects the shape of the Brillouin spectrum is of special interest. In this article a system is presented which allows the optimisation of the Brillouin spectrum. Simulations and first measurements show how the time delay can be enhanced with a simultaneous reduction of the pulse distortions.

Zero-gain slow & fast light propagation in an optical fiber

Sanghoon Chin, Miguel González‐Herráez, Luc Thévenaz A

Slow & fast light with null amplification or loss of a light signal is experimentally demonstrated. This novel method for producing zero-gain slow & fast light takes advantage of the great flexibility of stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers to generate synthesized gain spectra. Generation of optical delays and advancements with minor amplitude change is realized through the superposition of gain and loss profiles showing very different spectral widths, resulting in a synthesized spectral profile identical to an ideal electromagnetically-induced transparency.
