Modeling and visualization of quantum bifurcations in phase space

Abstract

We investigate quantum-mechanical counterpart of a classical instability in a phase space by the numerical method of quantum trajectories with moving basis. As an application the model of coupled two oscillators driven by a monochromatic force in the presence of dissipation (intracavity second harmonic generation) is analyzed. The system of interest is characterized by two bifurcations leading to ranges of instability: the Hopf bifurcation which connects a steady state dynamics of the oscillatory modes to a self-pulsing temporal dynamics and the bifurcation of the period-doubling. The both two regimes are analyzed on the framework of the semiclassical phase trajectories and the Wigner functions of the oscillatory modes in phase space.

Quantum fluctuations in unstable dissipative systems

S. T. Gevorkyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan, Naira T. Muradyan

We show how quantum instability is displayed in the von Neumann entropy and in the Wigner function. For this purpose, an intracavity second-harmonic generation close to the Hopf bifurcation range is studied. We examine the role of dissipation in unstable dynamics and the formation of the quantum states of the cavity modes, and discuss contrast ensemble behavior with that of individual realization on the basis of a quantum-jump simulation method. Namely, it is found that the Wigner functions for fundamental and second-harmonic modes prepared initially in a vacuum state acquire the three-hump structure due to phase symmetry breaking in the bifurcation range. The time evolution of coherent states leads to long-lived swing of the system between two side humps in a phase space.

Bifurcation and quantum delocalized states in second-harmonic generation

S. T. Gevorkyan

For the process of intracavity second-harmonic generation in the region of unstable dynamics, the joint fluctuations of numbers of photons and phases of the fundamental mode and second harmonic are studied in positive P representation. It is shown that above the bifurcation point of the optical system the distribution functions of the phases of the fundamental mode and second harmonic have a two-component structure. The quantum trajectories of the phases of these modes are not localized in the components of their states, which demonstrates the presence of quantum-mechanical interference between these components. In both components of each state the same values of numbers of photons are realized. It is shown that in the case of coherent initial states of both modes the joint distribution functions of the numbers of photons and phases are in the oscillatory regime. With time, the modes pass from a two-component delocalized state to a one-component one and then back to the two-component state. The time of oscillation of the distribution function is of the order of the photon's lifetime in the cavity volume. Self-matching of phases of interacting modes is investigated above the bifurcation point.

DISSIPATIVE CHAOS IN QUANTUM DISTRIBUTIONS

T. V. GEVORGYAN, S. B. MANVELYAN, A. R. SHAHINYAN +1 more

We discuss some problems of dissipative chaos for open quantum systems in the framework of semiclassical and quantum distributions. For this goal, we propose a driven nonlinear oscillator with time-dependent coefficients, i.e. with time-dependent Kerr-nonlinearity and time-modulated driving field. This model showing both regular and chaotic dynamics in the classical limit is realized in several experimental schemes. Quantum dissipative chaos is analyzed on the base of numerical method of quantum trajectories. Three quantities are studied: the Wigner function of oscillatory mode from the point of view of quantum-assemble theory and both semiclassical Poincare section and quantum Poincare section calculated on a single quantum trajectory. The comparatively analysis of these distributions for various operational chaotic regimes of the models is performed, as well as scaling invariance in dissipative chaos and quantum interference effects assisted by chaos are discussed.

Chaos in a double driven dissipative nonlinear oscillator

Hayk H. Adamyan, Suren B. Manvelyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We propose an anharmonic oscillator driven by two periodic forces of different frequencies as a time-dependent model for investigating quantum dissipative chaos. Our analysis is done in the framework of the statistical ensemble of quantum trajectories in a quantum state diffusion approach. The quantum dynamical manifestations of chaotic behavior, including the emergence of chaos, properties of strange attractors, and quantum entanglement, are studied by numerical simulation of the ensemble averaged Wigner function and von Neumann entropy.

Bistability and chaos at low levels of quanta

T. V. Gevorgyan, A. R. Shahinyan, Lock Yue Chew +1 more

We study nonlinear phenomena of bistability and chaos at a level of few quanta. For this purpose, we consider a single-mode dissipative oscillator with strong Kerr nonlinearity with respect to the dissipation rate driven by a monochromatic force as well as by a train of Gaussian pulses. The quantum effects and decoherence in the oscillatory mode are investigated in the framework of the purity of states and the Wigner functions calculated from the master equation. We demonstrate the quantum chaotic regime by means of a comparison between the contour plots of the Wigner functions and the strange attractors on the classical Poincaré section. Considering bistability at a low limit of quanta, we analyze the minimal level of excitation numbers at which the bistable regime of the system is displayed. We also discuss the formation of an oscillatory chaotic regime by varying oscillatory excitation numbers at ranges of a few quanta. We demonstrate quantum-interference phenomena that are assisted hysteresis-cycle behavior and quantum chaos for the oscillator driven by a train of Gaussian pulses. We establish the border of quantum-classical correspondence for chaotic regimes in the case of strong nonlinearities.
