Abstract

An experimental study was made of the amplitude distributions of noise and of a signal with noise in a detector with parametric frequency conversion. The distributions were quite close to the Poisson law, which confirmed the theoretical assumptions. The results of this study were used to determine the real sensitivity of the detector, which was 2×10−8 W, and the probability false readings and misses, which was 10–3.

Investigation of the statistical characteristics of spontaneous noise in parametric frequency converters

I. N. Matveev, S M Pshenichnikov, A F Umnov

An experimental investigation was made of the statistical characteristics of spontaneous parametric luminescence generated in the course of parametric frequency up-conversion. It was found that the laws governing the amplitude distribution and the distribution of photocounts of parametric luminescence were nearly of the Poisson type.

Measurement of covariance of analog detector readings in the field of spontaneous parametric down-conversion

T. I. Novikova, Kirill A. Kuznetsov, I.V. Korolev +2 more

An approach is considered that can be applied to calibrate detectors operating in the analog signal recording mode. Statistical distributions of the readings of such detectors are studied taking into account fluctuations in the amplitudes of single-photon detector pulses.

Quantum noise properties of parametric processes

Colin J. McKinstrie, M. Yu, M. G. Raymer +1 more

In this paper the quantum noise properties of phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive parametric processes are studied. Formulas for the field-quadrature and photon-number means and variances are derived, for processes that involve arbitrary numbers of modes. These quantities determine the signal-to-noise ratios associated with the direct and homo-dyne detection of optical signals. The consequences of the aforementioned formulas are described for frequency conversion, amplification, monitoring, and transmission through sequences of attenuators and amplifiers.

Parametric noise in a nonlinear frequency up-converter of infrared signals by two-photon pumping of 3S–3Dand 3S–5Stransitions in sodium vapor

Yu A Galaĭchuk, Vladimir A. Kudryashov, V. L. Strizhevskiǐ +2 more

A systematic analysis was made of the spectral characteristics of resonance four-photon parametric conversion of infrared radiation as a result of two-photon resonance pumping of the 3S–3D and 3S–5S transitions in sodium and the influence of these characteristics on the threshold sensitivity of a parametric conversion detector was investigated. An experimental study was made of the characteristics of the noise radiation generated as a result of hyperparametric scattering. The results obtained can be used to select the optimal parameters of high-sensitivity detectors of weak infrared signals by parametric conversion in alkali metal vapors.

Measurement of amplitude probability distributions for photon-number-operator eigenstates

Bernard Yurke, David Stoler

A homodyne detector measures a field-amplitude component of the incoming signal. If the incoming signal is in an $n$-photon eigenstate the homodyne detector's output probability distribution exhibits $n$ fringes. Here the degree to which the visibility of these fringes is degraded by a homodyne detector with less than unit quantum efficiency is evaluated. An experiment employing conjugate pairs of photons generated via a parametric down conversion or four-wave mixing is proposed by which these fringes could be observed.

Threshold characteristics of receivers with optical quantum amplifiers

Dmitry V Konarev, I. N. Matveev, S M Pshenichnikov

An equation for the distribution of the number of photoelectrons at the output of a radiation detector of an optical receiver with a preamplifier is derived for the case of a Poisson distribution of the incident photons. An analysis is given of the noise in a glass-fiber preamplifier. A computer calculation is reported of the probability of transmission of a signal for a given probability of spurious operation. This calculation is made for the case of an amplifier generating few modes. The results are given of an experimental investigation of a receiver with a neodymium glass-fiber amplifier. These results support the calculations.
