Nonuniversal properties of the single-particle density of states of a one-dimensional system with electron-phonon interactions

Abstract

We have calculated the single-particle density of states (DOS) for a model of spinful Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with a frequency dependent parameter ${K}_{c}$ of the charge sector (and ${K}_{s}=1$ of spin sector). Such a frequency dependence may originate from interactions with optical phonons. The DOS exhibits a power-law suppressed asymptotic behavior near $\ensuremath{\omega}=0$ with an exponent larger than 1, in agreement with previous results. For larger frequencies, but still not far away from the origin, the DOS exhibits a peak, the position of which scales as $[{K(0)+K}^{\ensuremath{-}1}(0)]{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0},$ where ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$ is the characteristic phonon frequency. The position of the peak decreases as the phonon's frequency becomes smaller. It is interesting that the peak of the DOS does not coincide with the characteristic phonon frequency.

A Pseudogap in the Single-Particle Density of States of a Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid

Emiliano Papa, Alexei M. Tsvelik

We study a single-particle density of states (DOS) in a model of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with small (large) values of the Luttinger parameter $K_\rc < 0.17$, ($K_\rc > 5.82$), in the charge sector. We explain that such values of $K_\rc$ may be achieved by electron-phonon interactions without generating the spin gap. We suggest that electron-phonon interactions can be partially incorporated into the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid scheme by introducing frequency dependent $K_\rc(ω)$. We demonstrate that when the low-frequency asymptotic value $K_\rc(0) < 0.17$ or $K_\rc(0) > 5.82$, the single-particle DOS has a pseudogap behavior in frequency where $ρ(ω)/ω$ vanishes at small frequencies. The DOS exhibits a peak the position of which scales as $[K(0) + K^{-1}(0)]ω_0/2$ where $ω_0$ is the characteristic phonon frequency.

Nonuniversality of the one-particle Green’s function of a Luttinger liquid

V. Meden

The one-particle Green's function of the Tomonaga-Luttinger model for one-dimensional interacting electrons is discussed. For certain directions within the plane of space-time coordinates the exponent of the asymptotic power law decay is not given by the Luttinger liquid parameters ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ and ${K}_{\ensuremath{\sigma}}.$ The consequences for Luttinger liquids in general and their spectral properties are discussed.

Luttinger parameters and momentum distribution function for the half-filled spinless fermion Holstein model: A DMRG approach

S. Ejima, H. Fehske

We reexamine the nature of the metallic phase of the one-dimensional half-filled Holstein model of spinless fermions. To this end, we determine the Tomonaga-Luttinger–liquid correlation parameter K ρ by large-scale density matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) calculations, exploiting i) the leading-order scaling relations between the ground-state energy and the single-particle excitation gap and ii) the static charge structure factor in the long-wavelength limit. While both approaches give almost identical results for intermediate-to-large phonon frequencies, we find contrasting behaviour in the adiabatic regime: i) K ρ >1 (attractive) vs. ii) K ρ < 1 (repulsive). The latter result for the correlation exponent is corroborated by data obtained for the momentum distribution function n ( k ), which puts the existence of an attractive metallic state in the spinless fermion Holstein model into question. We conclude that the scaling relation must be modified in the presence of electron-phonon interactions with noticeable retardation.

Interplay of charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in the spectral properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model

Alberto Nocera, Mohammad Soltanieh-ha, C. A. Perroni +2 more

We calculate the spectral function of the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, focusing on the regime of large local Coulomb repulsion, and away from electronic half-filling. We argue that, from weak to intermediate electron-phonon coupling, phonons interact only with the electronic charge, and not with the spin degrees of freedom. For strong electron-phonon interaction, spinon and holon bands are not discernible anymore and the system is well described by a spinless polaronic liquid. In this regime, we observe multiple peaks in the spectrum with an energy separation corresponding to the energy of the lattice vibrations (i.e., phonons). We support the numerical results by introducing a well controlled analytical approach based on Ogata-Shiba's factorized wave function, showing that the spectrum can be understood as a convolution of three contributions, originating from charge, spin, and lattice sectors. We recognize and interpret these signatures in the spectral properties and discuss the experimental implications.

Nature of ground states in one-dimensional electron-phonon Hubbard models at half filling

H. Bakrim, C. Bourbonnais

The renormalization group technique is applied to one-dimensional electron-phonon Hubbard models at half filling and zero temperature. For the Holstein-Hubbard model, the results of one-loop calculations are congruent with the phase diagram obtained by quantum Monte Carlo simulations in the $(U,{g}_{\mathrm{ph}})$ plane for the phonon-mediated interaction ${g}_{\mathrm{ph}}$ and the Coulomb interaction $U$. The incursion of an intermediate phase between a fully gapped charge-density-wave state and a Mott antiferromagnet is supported along with the growth of its size with the molecular phonon frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}$. We find additional phases enfolding the base boundary of the intermediate phase. A Luttinger liquid line is found below some critical ${U}^{*}\ensuremath{\approx}{g}_{\mathrm{ph}}^{*}$, followed at larger $U\ensuremath{\sim}{g}_{\mathrm{ph}}$ by a narrow region of bond-order-wave ordering which is either charge or spin gapped depending on $U$. For the Peierls-Hubbard model, the region of the $(U,{g}_{\mathrm{ph}})$ plane with a fully gapped Peierls-bond-order-wave state shows a growing domination over the Mott gapped antiferromagnet as the Debye frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D}$ decreases. A power-law dependence ${g}_{\mathrm{ph}}\ensuremath{\sim}{U}^{2\ensuremath{\eta}}$ is found to map out the boundary between the two phases, whose exponent is in good agreement with the existing quantum Monte Carlo simulations performed when a finite nearest-neighbor repulsion term $V$ is added to the Hubbard interaction.
