Extracting the phase information from atomic memory by intensity correlation measurement

Jinxian Guo, Kai Zhang, L. Q. Chen +4 more

We demonstrate experimentally controlled storage and retrieval of the optical phase information in a higher-order interference scheme based on Raman process in (87)Rb atomic vapor cells. An interference pattern is observed in intensity correlation measurement between the write Stokes field and the delayed read Stokes field as the phase of the Raman write field is scanned. This result implies that the phase information of the Raman write field can be written into the atomic spin wave via Raman process in a high gain regime and subsequently read out via a spin-wave enhanced Raman process, thus achieving optical storage of phase information. This technique should find applications in optical phase image storage, holography and information processing.

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering in a high-finesse microcavity

Benjamin Petrak, Nicholas Djeu, Andreas Müller

We report the measurement of degenerate coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) in a high-finesse optical microcavity, with an atmospheric gas as the nonlinear medium. Unlike the well-known bulk process in which index-dispersion compensation is required for phase-matching, efficient microcavity CARS involves a resonant coupling at the Stokes, pump, and anti-Stokes frequencies which can be described using coupled-mode analysis. We show how the interaction is thereby dramatically enhanced in a microscopic sample volume and illustrate the technique for the measurement of CO₂ in air.

Cascade correlation-enhanced Raman scattering in atomic vapors

Hongmei Ma, L. Q. Chen, Chun-Hua Yuan

A new Raman process can be used to realize efficient Raman frequency conversion by coherent feedback at low light intensity [Chen B, Zhang K, Bian C L, Qiu C, Yuan C H, Chen L Q, Ou Z Y, and Zhang W P 2013 Opt. Express 21 , 10490]. We present a theoretical model to describe this enhanced Raman process, termed as cascade correlation-enhanced Raman scattering, which is a Raman process injected by a seeded light field. It is correlated with the initially prepared atomic spin excitation and driven by the quasi-standing-wave pump fields, and the processes are repeated until the Stokes intensities are saturated. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may find applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics, and optical metrology due to its simplicity.
