A proposal for the implementation of a quantum phase gate in a five-level atomic medium

Abstract

The interaction of a five-level atomic system involving electromagnetically induced transparency with four light fields is investigated. Two different operating regimes are considered, semi-classical and quantized, where two light fields are treated as quantum. In the semi-classical regime, the dispersive properties of the scheme are analyzed in detail, and the conditions leading to group velocity matching for two of the light fields are identified. In the quantized regime, the two quantum fields undergo cross-phase modulation induced by electromagnetically induced transparency. Based on this, a recent proposal [C. Ottaviani et al., Phys. Rev. A 73 , 010301 (R) (2006)] for a two-qubit quantum phase gate for traveling single-photon qubits is examined. An experimental scheme for verification of QPG operation is proposed.

Assessment of a quantum phase-gate operation based on nonlinear optics

S. Rebić, Carlo Ottaviani, Giovanni Di Giuseppe +2 more

We analyze in detail the proposal for a two-qubit gate for travelling single-photon qubits recently presented by Ottaviani et al. [Phys. Rev. A 73, 010301(R) (2006)]. The scheme is based on an ensemble of five-level atoms coupled to two quantum and two classical light fields. The two quantum fields undergo cross-phase modulation induced by electromagnetically induced transparency. The performance of this two-qubit quantum phase gate for travelling single-photon qubits is thoroughly examined in the steady-state and transient regimes, by means of a full quantum treatment of the system dynamics. In the steady-state regime, we find a general trade-off between the size of the conditional phase shift and the fidelity of the gate operation. However, this trade-off can be bypassed in the transient regime, where a satisfactory gate operation is found to be possible, significantly reducing the gate operation time.

Quantum phase-gate operation based on nonlinear optics: Full quantum analysis

Carlo Ottaviani, S. Rebić, David Vitali +1 more

We present a full quantum treatment of a five-level atomic system coupled to two quantum and two classical light fields. The two quantum fields undergo a cross-phase-modulation induced by electromagnetically induced transparency. The performance of this configuration as a two-qubit quantum phase gate for traveling single photons is examined. A trade-off between the size of the conditional phase shift and the fidelity of the gate is found. Nonetheless, a satisfactory gate performance is still found to be possible in the transient regime, corresponding to a fast gate operation.

Cross phase modulation in a five--level atomic medium: Semiclassical theory

Carlo Ottaviani, S. Rebić, Tombesi, P +1 more

The interaction of a five-level atomic system involving electromagnetically induced transparency with four light fields is investigated. Two different light-atom configurations are considered, and their efficiency in generating large nonlinear cross-phase shifts compared. The dispersive properties of those schemes are analyzed in detail, and the conditions leading to group velocity matching for two of the light fields identified. An analytical treatment based on amplitude equations is used in order to obtain approximate solutions for the susceptibilities, ehich are shown to fit well with the numerical simulations of the full Bloch equations in a large parameter region.

A Study of Optical Nonlinearities at the Single-Photon Level for Quantum Logic

Balakrishnan Viswanathan

In this dissertation, we shall focus on theoretically studying quantum nonlinear optical schemes to construct a conditional phase gate at the single-photon level. With an aim to develop analytical models, we shall carry out a rigorous quantized multimode field analysis of some of these schemes involving only the interacting field operators. More specifically, we shall first study the three-wave mixing process involving two single-photons in a second-order nonlinear medium (x(2)) under two different cases viz. when the photons are traveling with equal velocities and when they are traveling with different velocities, and explore the possibility of using them for building a conditional phase phase gate. Finally, we shall study the interaction of single-photon wavepackets with a realistic atomic system viz. an ensemble of five-level atoms, to construct a phase gate. We will particularly look at the "giant Kerr" effect in electromagnetically induced transparency to explore the possibility of using this scheme for achieving a conditional phase shift and to understand how the bandwidth gets restricted naturally in such an atomic system.

Quantum Memory, Quantum Phase Gate and Polarization Entangled Photon Pairs in a Coherent Atomic System

Ying Gu, Fuli Li, Qihuang Gong +1 more

It is known that photons are the ideal carriers of quantum information and ensemble of atoms can be acted as the long lived storage and processing units. In the coherently prepared atomic ensemble with the light resonantly interacting with the atoms, various schemes have been proposed to implement quantum state transfer and storage, quantum phase gate, generation of entangled photons, and the long-distance quantum communication [1]. We first proposed the dark-state polaritons in a five-level M-type atomic ensemble in the electro magnetically induced transparency (EIT) [2], Under conditions of the low excitation limit and adiabatic following, the quantum field can be mapped onto the atomic polarization states, forming the shape preserving quantum states of polaritons. Two channels for robust quantum memory are provided. Then, we investigated the nonlinear optical response of a five-level tripod atomic system in the EIT, and proposed a three-qubit phase gate protocol based on the fifth-order nonlinearity [3]. The cross phase modulation among three weak fields induced by the fifth-order nonlinearity in EIT can produce the phase shift of order n, which can be used to realize the three-qubit polarization phase gate. Finally, we proposed a cavity-QED scheme that can effectively generate EPR polarization-entangled photon pairs [4], A four-level tripod atom successively couples to two high-Q optical cavities possessing polarization degeneracy, assisted by a classical π-polarized pump field. The stimulated Raman adiabatic passage process in the atom-cavity system is used to produce the polarization-entangled photon pairs. The proposal is particularly robust against atomic spontaneous decay. The above protocols should have potential applications in quantum information processing.
