Abstract

The solution is obtained for the fully quantized dipole interaction between monochromatic photons in the number representation and a multilevel atomic system with unequal energy level spacing. An operator form of the rotating wave model is used. Specific results for three-level and four-level systems are presented.

Semiclassical interaction of multilevel atoms with monochromatic electromagnetic fields

Alfred M. Levine, W. M. Schreiber, Andrei N. Weiszmann

The solution of the time-dependent Hamiltonian for the semiclassical dipole interaction of a multilevel atom with monochromatic electromagnetic fields is presented. Characteristics of the eigenvalue equation are investigated. Results are presented for the interaction of unequally spaced multilevel atoms with multiple monochromatic electromagnetic fields. The connection with the quantized-field method is discussed. Complications due to atomic decay are included only in the final discussion.

Electromagnetic dipole interaction of multilevel atoms

Leon F. Landovitz, Alfred M. Levine, W. M. Schreiber +1 more

The dynamical behavior of the dipole interaction of an equally spaced multilevel atom is analyzed. The atom has a spinlike distribution of dipole transition moments and interacts with a single-mode radiation field. Detailed results for three-level ($J=1$) and four-level ($J=\frac{3}{2}$) systems are presented.

In the coherent-state representation, the technique applied to the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model in the absence of rotating wave approximation (RWA) is extended to the treatment of a many-level atom interacting with a monochromatic field. Some general results are presented.

Electric field commutation relation in the presence of a dipole atom

James D. Cresser

A calculation is presented of the unequal-time electric field commutation relation for an electromagnetic field coupled to a general multilevel atom treated as a nonrelativistic system. Use is made of the multipolar Hamiltonian in its dipole approximate form to describe the atom-field interaction. Contributions to the commutator in addition to the usual Pauli-Jordan results for a free field are found, and a physical interpretation of their origin is offered.

The dynamics of a four-level three-mode system. Operator solution

M. Kozierowski, A.S. Shumovsky

In the dipole and rotating wave approximation the operator solutions for the level populations and photon numbers are found. The numerical results for the time-evolution of the level populations for the case of initially coherent pumping modes 1 and 3 (mode 2 initially in vacuum) are reported and compared with those for a three-level atom in the ladder and lambda configurations.

Exact solutions are given to the eigenvalue problem of a single, quantized field mode interacting in the dipole approximation with a single atom which has N-1 levels of one parity and one level of the opposite parity.
