Theory of Atomic Photon-Particle Coincidence Measurements

J. H. Macek, D. H. Jaecks

The theory of measurements in which photons are detected in delayed coincidence with a scattered particle is developed in a form specifically applicable to atomic collisions. Equations are obtained which relate the measured coincidence rate to excitation amplitudes. These equations incorporate the polarization of the radiation, the fine and hyperfine structure of the atomic levels, the coherence of the radiation, and the time dependence of the radiation intensity. A semiclassical model for certain transitions is introduced to illustrate new features of coincidence measurements. The $\mathrm{Ly}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}$ transitions in hydrogen and $^{1}P\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{1}S$ transitions in He are treated in detail to illustrate the general theory.

Coincidence subwavelength fractional Fourier transform

Yangjian Cai, Qiang Lin, Shi-Yao Zhu

The coincidence subwavelength fractional Fourier transforms (FRTs) with entangled photon pairs and incoherent light radiation are introduced as an extension of the recently introduced coincidence FRT. Optical systems for implementing the coincidence subwavelength FRTs are designed. The width of the coincidence subwavelength FRT pattern is two times narrower than the width of the coincidence FRT. The coincidence subwavelength FRT with partially coherent light radiation is also studied numerically. Differences between the coincidence subwavelength FRT with entangled photon pairs and that with incoherent light radiation are discussed.

Coincident Photon Coherence Analysis of the Mercury 6S01−6P13−6S01 Excitation/Deexcitation Process in Terms of Spin-Orbit Effects

Ali Zaidi, Ian A. McGregor, Hans Kleinpoppen

The electron-photon delayed-coincidence technique was used to measure the coincident photon radiation for the $6^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}6^{3}P_{1}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}6^{1}S_{0}$ process of mercury by electron impact. This process, which is found to be partially coherent, has been analyzed with a new parametrization which takes into account spin-orbit coupling.
