Abstract

We present a lower bound on the entropic uncertainty relation for the distinguished measurements of two observables in a d-dimensional Hilbert space for d up to 5. This bound provides an improvement over the best one yet available. The feasibility of the obtained bound presenting an improvement for higher dimensions is also discussed.

Improved bounds on entropic uncertainty relations

Julio I. de Vicente, Jorge Sánchez-Ruiz

Entropic uncertainty relations place nontrivial lower bounds to the sum of Shannon information entropies for noncommuting observables. Here we obtain a lower bound on the entropy sum for general pairs of observables in finite-dimensional Hilbert space, which improves on the best bound known to date [H. Maassen and J. B. M. Uffink, Phys. Rev. Lett. 60, 1103 (1988)] for a wide class of observables. This result follows from another formulation of the uncertainty principle, the Landau-Pollak inequality, whose relationship to the Maassen-Uffink entropic uncertainty relation is discussed.

Bounds on the entropic uncertainty in successive measurements of non-commuting observables

Mojtaba Jafarpour, Abbass Sabour

We obtain the exact entropic uncertainty and its upper and lower bound in successive measurements of N non-commuting observables, in a D-dimensional Hilbert space. The specific cases of complementary observables and the associated unbiased bases are also discussed. Spin measurements are considered as examples.

Bounds on the entropic uncertainty in distinguished and successive measurements of spin-(1/2) operators

Mojtaba Jafarpour, Shaaker Hajati

We calculate the exact entropic uncertainties in distinguished and successive measurements of two and three spin-(½) operators. Optimal upper and lower bounds for each measurement are obtained and an already existing upper bound is also improved.

Entropic Uncertainty for Biased Measurements

Walter O. Krawec

Entropic Uncertainty relations are powerful tools, especially in quantum cryptography. They typically bound the amount of uncertainty a third-party adversary may hold on a measurement outcome as a result of the measurement overlap. However, when the two measurement bases are biased towards one another, standard entropic uncertainty relations do not always provide optimal lower bounds on the entropy. Here, we derive a new entropic uncertainty relation, for certain quantum states, which can provide a significantly higher bound even if the two measurement bases are no longer mutually unbiased. We evaluate our bound on two different quantum cryptographic protocols, including BB84 with faulty/biased measurement devices, and show that our new bound can produce substantially higher key-rates under several scenarios when compared with prior work using standard entropic uncertainty relations.

Generalized entropic uncertainty relations

Hans Maassen, Jos Uffink

A new class of uncertainty relations is derived for pairs of observables in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space which do not have any common eigenvector. This class contains an ``entropic'' uncertainty relation which improves a previous result of Deutsch and confirms a recent conjecture by Kraus. Some comments are made on the extension of these relations to the case where the Hilbert space is infinite dimensional.

Strong entropic uncertainty relations for multiple measurements

Yunlong Xiao, Naihuan Jing, Shao-Ming Fei +4 more

In this paper, we study entropic uncertainty relations on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space and provide several tighter bounds for multimeasurements, with some of them also valid for R\'enyi and Tsallis entropies besides the Shannon entropy. We employ majorization theory and actions of the symmetric group to obtain an admixture bound for entropic uncertainty relations for multimeasurements. Comparisons among all bounds for multimeasurements are given in two figures.
