Approximations of density matrices in N-electron valence state second-order perturbation theory (NEVPT2). III. Large active space calculations with selected configuration interaction reference

Yang Guo, Kantharuban Sivalingam, Vijay Gopal Chilkuri +1 more

In multi-reference (MR) methods, addressing systems with large active spaces remains a challenge in the field. In Papers I and II of this series, we demonstrated that full rank N-electron valence state second-order perturbation theory (FR-NEVPT2) is a robust MR perturbation theory capable of computing strongly correlated systems with approximate density matrices. However, the previous FR-NEVPT2 implementation requires the computation and storage of fifth-order reduced density matrices (RDMs), limiting the usage of FR-NEVPT2 for systems with large active spaces. In the present work, as Paper III of the series, we report a new FR-NEVPT2 algorithm to handle systems with large active spaces. In the new algorithm, an approximate complete active space (CAS) self-consistent field (SCF) method, iterative configuration expansion (ICE) SCF, is employed to compute the reference wave functions for FR-NEVPT2. Then, the necessary Koopmans matrices of FR-NEVPT2 involving various RDMs are constructed using the intermediates designed by Kollmar et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 155, 234104 (2021)] to avoid storage bottlenecks. The performance of the new FR-NEVPT2 algorithm for systems with large active spaces is evaluated. Our results show that even with aggressive truncation parameters to truncate the ICE-SCF reference wave function, FR-NEVPT2 effectively recovers the missing static correlations of ICE-SCF. Several interesting systems with active spaces up to CAS(34,34) are studied using FR-NEVPT2 with ICE-SCF reference.

A New Study to the Schrödinger Equation for Modified Potential V(r)=ar2+br-4+cr-6 in Nonrelativistic Three Dimensional Real Spaces and Phases

In present work, by applying Boopp’s shift method and standard perturbation theory we have generated exact nonrelativistic bound states solution for a modified potential (see formula in paper) in both three dimensional noncommutative space and phase (NC: 3D-RSP) at first order of two two infinitesimal parameters antisymmetric (see formula in paper), we have also derived the corresponding noncommutative Hamiltonian.

Quantum mechanics in general quantum systems (II): Perturbation theory

An Min Wang

We propose an improved scheme of perturbation theory based on our exact solution [An Min Wang, quant-ph/0611216] in general quantum systems independent of time. Our elementary start-point is to introduce the perturbing parameter as late as possible. Our main skills are Hamiltonian redivision so as to overcome a flaw of the usual perturbation theory, and the perturbing Hamiltonian matrix product decomposition in order to separate the contraction and anti-contraction terms. Our calculational technology is the limit process for eliminating apparent divergences. Our central idea is ``dynamical rearrangement and summation" for the sake of the partial contributions from the high order even all order approximations absorbed in our perturbed solution. Consequently, we obtain the improved forms of the zeroth, first, second and third order perturbed solutions absorbing the partial contributions from the high order even all order approximations of perturbation. Then we deduce the improved transition probability. In special, we propose the revised Fermi's golden rule. Moreover, we apply our scheme to obtain the improved forms of perturbed energy and perturbed state. In addition, we study an easy understanding example of two-state system to illustrate our scheme and show its advantages. All of this implies the physical reasons and evidences why our improved scheme of perturbation theory are actually calculable, operationally efficient, conclusively more accurate. Our improved scheme is the further development and interesting application of our exact solution, and it has been successfully used to study on open system dynamics [An Min Wang, quant-ph/0601051].
