Nonlinear Dynamics of Multi-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract

Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC) provides a nice stage when the nonlinear Schrödinger equation plays a vital role. We study the dynamics of multi-component repulsive BEC in 2 dimensions with harmonic traps by using the nonlinear Schrödinger (or Gross-Pitaevskii) equation. Firstly we consider a driven two-component BEC with each component trapped in different vertical positions. The appropriate tuning of the oscillation frequency of the magnetic field leads to a striking anti-gravity transport of BEC. This phenomenon is a manifestation of macroscopic non-adiabatic tunneling in a system with two internal(electronic) degrees of freedom. The dynamics splits into a fast complex spatio-temporal oscillation of each condensate wavefunctions together with a slow levitation of the total center of mass. Secondly, we examine the three-component repulsive BEC in 2 dimensions in a harmonic trap in the absence of magnetic field, and construct a model of conservative chaos based on a picture of vortex molecules. We obtain an effective nonlinear dynamics for three vortex cores, which represents three charged particles under the uniform magnetic field with the repulsive inter-particle potential quadratic in the inter-vortex distance rij on short scale and logarithmic in rij on large scale. The vortices here acquire the inertia in marked contrast to the standard theory of point vortices since Onsager. We then explore “the chaos in the three-body problem” in the context of vortices with inertia.

Dynamics of inertial vortices in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates

Katsuhiro Nakamura, Doniyor Babajanov, Davron U. Matrasulov +1 more

With use of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger (or Gross-Pitaevskii) equation with strong repulsive cubic nonlinearity, dynamics of multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with a harmonic trap in two dimensions is investigated beyond the Thomas-Fermi regime. In the case when each component has a single vortex, we obtain an effective nonlinear dynamics for vortex cores (particles). The particles here acquire the inertia, in marked contrast to the standard theory of point vortices widely known in the usual hydrodynamics. The effective dynamics is equivalent to that of charged particles under a strong spring force and in the presence of Lorentz force with the uniform magnetic field. The interparticle (vortex-vortex) interaction is singularly repulsive and short ranged with its magnitude decreasing with increasing distance of the center of mass from the trapping center. ``Chaos in the three-body problem'' in the three-vortice system can be seen, which is not expected in the corresponding point vortices without inertia in two dimensions.

NONLINEAR DYNAMICS OF WAVE PACKETS AND VORTICES IN BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATES Chaos and Billiard Motion

Kaoru Nakamura

We study the dynamics of single and multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in two dimensions with and without a harmonic trap by using various variants of non- linear Schrodinger (or Gross-Pitaevskii) equation. Firstly, we examine the three-component repulsive BEC with cubic nonlinearity in a harmonic trap, and see the conservative chaos based on a picture of vortex molecules. We obtain an effective nonlinear dynamics for three vortex cores, which are equivalent to three charged particles under the uniform magnetic field with the repulsive inter-particle potential quadratic in the inter-vortex distance r ij on short length scale and logarithmic in r ij on large length scale. The vortices here acquire the inertia in marked contrast to the standard theory of point vortices since Onsager. We then explore chaos in the three-body problem in the context of vortices with inertia. Secondly, by choosing the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with saturable nonlinearity, we investigate the single and multi-component WP dynamics within the hard-walled square and stadium billiards with neither a harmonic trap nor driving field. We analyze the stability of WPs by using the variational (collective-coordinate) method. By emitting the radiation the Gaussian WP becomes deformed to a bell-shaped one and then stabilized. As the velocity increases, WPs tend to be stable against many collisions with billiard walls.

A Model for Conservative Chaos Constructed from Multicomponent Bose–Einstein Condensates with a Trap in Two Dimensions

Hisatsugu Yamasaki, Yuhei Natsume, Katsuhiro Nakamura

To show a mechanism leading to the breakdown of a particle picture for the multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates(BECs) with a harmonic trap in high dimensions, we investigate the corresponding 2-$d$ nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation (Gross-Pitaevskii equation) with use of a modified variational principle. A molecule of two identical Gaussian wavepackets has two degrees of freedom(DFs), the separation of center-of-masses and the wavepacket width. Without the inter-component interaction(ICI) these DFs show independent regular oscillations with the degenerate eigen-frequencies. The inclusion of ICI strongly mixes these DFs, generating a fat mode that breaks a particle picture, which however can be recovered by introducing a time-periodic ICI with zero average. In case of the molecule of three wavepackets for a three-component BEC, the increase of amplitude of ICI yields a transition from regular to chaotic oscillations in the wavepacket breathing.

Non-coaxial vortices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates: Persistent precession and nutation

Rodislav Driben, V. V. Konotop, T. Meier

It is demonstrated that a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with all-repulsive inter-atomic interactions loaded into a radially symmetric harmonic trap supports robust non-coaxial vortices with approximately orthogonal vortex lines in each of the components. These cross vortices are excited from the linear modes by a sudden switch-on of the nonlinearity (via Feshbach resonance) and are characterized by persistent dynamical regimes of precession with nutation, resembling the motion of a rigid body. The obtained dynamics can be understood qualitatively on the basis of a simple mechanical model.

Dynamics of trapped interacting vortices in Bose–Einstein condensates: a role of breathing degree of freedom

Katsuhiro Nakamura, Doniyor Babajanov, Davron Matrasulov +2 more

Abstract With use of a variational principle, we investigate a role of breathing width degree of freedom in the effective theory of interacting vortices in a trapped single-component Bose–Einstein condensates in two dimensions, under strong repulsive cubic nonlinearity. For the trial function, we choose a product of two vortex functions, assuming a pair interaction, and employ the amplitude form of each vortex function in the Padé approximation, which accommodates a hallmark of the vortex core. We obtain the Lagrange equation for the interacting vortex-core coordinates coupled with the time-derivative of width and also its Hamilton formalism by having recourse to a non-standard Poisson bracket. By solving the Hamilton equation, we find rapid radial breathing oscillations superposed on the slower rotational motion of vortex cores, consistent with numerical solutions of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. In higher-energy states of two vortex systems, the breathing width degree of freedom plays the role of a kicking in the kicked rotator, and generates chaos with a structure of sea-urchin needles. The by-products of the present variational approach include: (1) the charge-dependent logarithmic inter-vortex interaction multiplied with a pre-factor, which depends on the scalar product of a pair of core-position vectors; (2) the charge-independent short-range repulsive inter-vortex interaction and spring force.

Josephson dynamics of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in a dual-core trap: Homogeneous, droplet-droplet, and vortex-vortex regimes

Sherzod R. Otajonov, F. Kh. Abdullaev

The dynamics of a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate mixture, loaded into a dual-core trap, when the beyond-mean-field effects are taken into account, are considered. The effects of quantum fluctuations are described by the Lee-Huang-Yang correction terms in the extended coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPE). The spatially uniform and inhomogeneous condensate cases are studied. In the first case, the parameter regimes associated with macroscopic quantum tunneling, macroscopic self-trapping, and revival-like localization dynamics are found. The Josephson oscillation frequencies for both the zero-phase and the π -phase modes are derived. As the total atom number is varied, the dynamics exhibit a nontrivial bifurcation structure: along the zero-phase branch, two successive pitchfork bifurcations generate bistability and hysteresis, while the π -phase branch shows a single pitchfork bifurcation. In the second case, the Josephson dynamics for quantum droplets and vortices are investigated. The analytical predictions for the oscillation frequencies of the atomic population between quantum droplets are found, and results are validated by direct numerical simulations of the system of coupled extended GPE. The existence of the Andreev-Bashkin nondissipative drag through simulations of droplet-droplet interactions is shown. The Josephson dynamics of vortex states are studied. It was found that vortices with topological charge S and sufficiently small particle number are typically unstable, breaking up into S + 1 (and occasionally S + 2 ) fundamental, nonvortical fragments, with the time to breakup increasing as the particle number grows. It is also found that unstable asymmetric vortices exhibit the splitting and/or crescentlike instability. For vortices with sufficiently large norms, long-time simulations confirm robust stability against small perturbations. In this stable regime, the properties of Josephson oscillations and Andreev-Bashkin-type entrainment for vortex states with charges S = 1 , 2 , and 3 are investigated.
