Abstract

The 5 snd 3 D 1 and 3 D 3 series of Sr are analysed by means of multi-channel quantum defect theory for principal quantum numbers n > 12. With a two-channel analysis using the 4 dns configuration as second channel the admixture of 4 d 6 s 3 D 1 and 3 D 3 character into the two 5 snd J = 1 and J = 3 series is determined.

Multichannel quantum defect theory of strontium bound Rydberg states

Christophe L. Vaillant, M P A Jones, R. M. Potvliege

Abstract Using the reactance matrix approach, we systematically develop new multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) models for the singlet and triplet S, P, D and F states of strontium below the first ionization limit, based on improved energy level measurements. The new models reveal additional insights into the character of doubly excited perturber states, and the improved energy level measurements for certain series allow fine structure to be resolved for those series’ perturbers. Comparison between the predictions of the new models and those of previous empirical and ab initio studies reveals good agreement with most series; however, some discrepancies are highlighted. Using the MQDT wave functions derived from our models we calculate other observables such as Landé -factors and radiative lifetimes. The analysis reveals the impact of perturbers on the Rydberg state properties of divalent atoms, highlighting the importance of including two-electron effects in the calculations of these properties. The work enables future investigations of properties such as Stark maps and long-range interactions of Rydberg states of strontium.

Abstract Newly calculated multichannel quantum defect theory parameters and channel fractions are presented for the singlet and triplet S, P and D series and singlet F series of strontium. These results correct those reported in Vaillant et al (2014 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 47 155001).

Hyperfine structure of extremely high Rydberg msnd1D2,3D1,3D2and3D3series in odd alkaline-earth isotopes

Jun-Qiang Sun, K. T. Lu, R. Beigang

The MQDT of hyperfine structure is greatly simplified in extremely high Rydberg states. A four (or three)-channel quantum defect model is derived for the hyperfine structure of extremely high Rydberg states of msnd configuration in odd alkaline-earth isotopes, in which the transformation matrix U i(F)i' is given analytically except for one parameter which measures the mixing of singlet 1 D 2 and triple 3 D 2 induced by spin-orbit interaction in even isotopes, and in which the four eigen quantum defects mu i' (i'=1, 2, 3, 4) are related to the quantum defects of the fine structure in even isotopes by mu i' =mod( delta i' ). This model has been used to interpret the observed sublevel structure of 5snd (n>100) configurations in 87 Sr. An excellent agreement between the theoretical and experimental results was achieved.

Configuration interaction and singlet-triplet mixing probed by hyperfine structure of 6s14d1D2and3D1,2,3barium Rydberg states

Jörg Neukammer, Herbert H. Rinneberg

The hyperfine structure of the 6s14d configuration of barium has been measured by optical-optical double resonance. From the observed positions for the hyperfine components of the 1 D 2 and 3 D 1,2,3 Rydberg states, the singlet and triplet character as well as the amount of admixture of the 5d7d perturbing configuration was deduced. Although agreeing qualitatively, the authors' results differ quantitatively from predictions made by multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT).

Tuning long-range interactions in Sr Rydberg atoms: the effect of series perturbations

Türker Topçu, Andrei Derevianko

We investigate the effect of series perturbation on the second-order dipole-dipole interactions between strontium atoms in the $5sns({^1}S_0)$ and $5snp({^1}P_1)$ Rydberg states as a means of engineering long-range interactions between atoms. The series perturbation in these atoms enables modifying the strength and the sign of the interaction by varying the principal quantum number $n$ of the Rydberg electron. We utilize experimentally available data to estimate the importance of perturber states, and find that van der Waals interaction between two strontium atoms in the $5snp({^1}P_1)$ states shows strong peaks outside the anticipated hydrogenic $n^{11}$ scaling. We identify this to be the result of the perturbation of $5snd({^1}D_2)$ intermediate states by the $4d^2({^1}D_2)$ and $4dn's({^1}D_2)$ states in the $n<20$ range. This demonstrates that divalent atoms offer a unique advantage for generating substantially stronger or weaker inter-atomic interactions than those that can be achieved using alkali metal atoms. This is due to the highly perturbed spectra of divalent atoms and other multivalent atoms that can persist up to high $n$. Such irregularities can be especially useful in engineering asymmetric Ry blockade requiring the simultaneous presence of both ``weak'' and ``strong'' interactions.

Hyperfine structure and three-channel quantum-defect theory of 6sndD21 Rydberg states of Ba

Herbert H. Rinneberg, Jörg Neukammer

The hyperfine structure of $6snd^{1}D_{2}$ Rydberg states of $^{135,137}\mathrm{Ba}$ is reported for principal quantum numbers ranging between $n=10$ and $n=50$. From our data, singlet-triplet mixing coefficients have been deduced. A three-channel quantum-defect model has been used to analyze the resonance in singlet-triplet mixing of $6snd^{1}D_{2} \mathrm{and} ^{3}D_{2}$ Rydberg states in the vicinity of the $5d7d^{1}D_{2}$ perturber. For the determination of the scattering matrix, hyperfine-structure data were found to be essential. Good agreement has been achieved between calculated and experimental singlet-triplet mixing coefficients.
