Abnormal velocity of soliton-type pulses in a nonlinear three-level medium with population inversion

Abstract

We present an analytical solution of the Maxwell-Schr\"odinger set of equations describing propagation of a two-component short electromagnetic pulse through a medium consisting of atoms with a @sV-type level scheme with an initially inverted population. This solution demonstrates solitonlike waves traveling at a velocity exceeding the vacuum speed of light c (or even a negative velocity) until they reach the forward (or, respectively, trailing) pulse front. The front propagation velocity recognized as information transmission velocity is explicitly found to be equal to c.

Extremely short and quasi-monochromatic electromagnetic solitons in a two-component medium

С. В. Сазонов

The propagation of extremely short (without high-frequency filling) pulses and nonresonant envelope solitons in a two-component medium comprising two-level atoms with substantially different quantum transition frequencies was studied. The dynamics of a pulse whose reciprocal time scale lay between these frequencies was shown to be described by the Kosevich-Kovalev equation, the one-way variant of which was the Konno-Kameyama-Sanuki equation. If the transition dipole moments of medium components were equal, the one-way equation became integrable. Soliton and soliton-like solutions to these equations were used to analyze pulse propagation regimes at various two-component medium initial states. The stability of these localized wave formations was analyzed. The possible existence of stable soliton-like pulses propagating in a nonequilibrium medium at group velocities exceeding the velocity of light in vacuum was discussed.

Coherent soliton propagation in a mixture of two-level atoms

F. C. Moreira, WANESSA RODRIGUES NASCIMENTO, Solange Bessa Cavalcanti +1 more

Exact soliton solutions of a coupled system of Maxwell-Bloch equations are obtained analytically within the inverse scattering transform scheme. The equations describe a light pulse coherently propagating through a mixed ensemble of two-level atoms characterized by two slightly different detuning parameters. The solution illustrates the information about the detailed atomic properties which are impressed on both phase and velocity of the pulse during propagation, with potential applications in high resolution spectroscopy.

Coupled Optical Solitons for Pulse Propagation in Multi-Level Media

Guoxiang Huang, Jacob Szeftel

We investigate the shape-preserving propagation of N optical pulses in an ( N +1)-level medium. We solve Maxwell-Schrödinger equations exactly and provide several types of explicit coupled soliton solutions, which are temporally amplitude- and group-velocity-matched multi-mode slow-optical pulses of the system.

Slow-light solitons in two-level media generated by evanescent fields

Jérôme J.-P. Leon

Coupling a two-level medium, described by the Maxwell-Bloch (MB) equations, to an external cavity mode results in a prescribed boundary value for the electric field that can be tuned to the forbidden band gap of the medium. It is shown that there exists a threshold of energy density flux above which a solitonlike light pulse is generated and propagates in the medium at a fraction of the light velocity. When the driving frequency becomes close to the band gap edge, where the group velocity vanishes, the MB equations tend to the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation which furnishes the theoretical ground to understand soliton generation by evanescent fields as a manifestation of nonlinear supratransmission, produced by an instability of the evanescent wave. Moreover, the propagation at a fraction of light velocity is shown to result from a continuous periodic exchange between polarization (electromagnetic energy) and population (density of atoms in the excited level). The process is demonstrated to occur at twice the internal frequency of the generated gap soliton. Last, when the medium spatial extension is of the order of the soliton dimension, an optical bistability is shown to occur at the supratransmission threshold allowing for different output intensities corresponding to a given input value.

Dynamics of solitons in a three-level medium with linear birefringence

Alexander A. Zabolotskii

The dynamics of ultrashort pulses in a three-level or degenerate two-level medium is studied in the framework of integrable systems of the Maxwell-Bloch equations for pulses with a duration much longer than or comparable with the inverse transition frequency, with allowance made for linear birefringence. Using soliton-type solutions, we study the effect of birefringence on soliton conversion for different initial populations of the levels.

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Minh Dong Hoang, Van Doai Le, Ngoc Sau Vu +2 more

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such i.e., the effect is established. Under conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state.
