Population locking in driven three-level atoms

Abstract

Novel coherent transient effects of population locking in driven three-level media are demonstrated theoretically. With the help of exact solutions of the evolution equation with the time-dependent Hamiltonian we `design' laser and rf fields to lock population under the conditions of nonstationary two- and tri-photon resonances.

Interaction of Three-level Atoms with Modulated Lasers

David Thomas Pegg

The problem of finding the time development of a three-level atom in interaction with two modulated laser beams is discussed. Formulation of the Hamiltonian in terms of spin-one operators, their squares and their anti-commutators allows exact and approximate analytical solutions for the time evolution operator to be found for a wide variety of interactions involving fields which are amplitude or frequency modulated. A fortuitous set of cyclic commutation relations among the subset of operator combinations Jx, {Jx, Jy} and {Jz, Jx} which allows an exact solution to be found for double photon resonance when the fields are amplitude modulated in quadrature, also allows the possibility of finding approximate solutions for more general modulation phase relations. The use of the formalism for describing population trapping and for finding a method of transient atomic state squeezing is also briefly discussed. The optical-frequency rotating-wave approximation is used throughout.

Multilevel atomic dynamics in modulated laser field

Sergey V. Prants

We develop the group-theoretical approach for analytically solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equations for multilevel atoms driven by amplitude- and/or frequency-modulated concurrent laser fields. The time evolution of externally driven N-level atoms is calculated in an explicit matrix form. The exact analytical conditions for complete population transfer and its return are simply connected with the parameters of the symmetry. We consider in detail the case of a four-level system driven by concurrent laser pulses of different forms.

POPULATION TRAPPING PHENOMENA IN A TWO-LEVEL SYSTEM

LONG DE-SHUN, Ning Xi-Jing, 复旦大学现代物理研究所,上海200433

The critical criterion for realizing population trapping is deduced for a two-level system driven by a frequency-modulated laser field in terms of dressed atom model, followed by demonstrating the various population trapping behaviours under different conditions. Detailed numerical solutions of time-dependent Schr?idinger equation are found to be in good agreement with the analytical results.

Transient response of two-level atoms to probe pulse in the presence of near-resonant laser driven pulse: numerical results

Peng Fu

Transient responses of two-level atoms to a probe pulses with different frequencies have been studied in the presence of near-resonant laser driven pulse. Time evolutions of atomic polarization during and after the probe pulse have been calculated for both one-photon and three-photon processes. The interference effect between one-photon and throe-photon process have been discussed.

Population trapping of a two-level atom via interaction with CEP-locked laser pulse

Ju Liu, Jiafang Li, Chao Zhang +1 more

The trapping states of a quantum system occupy a very special place in quantum optics. Here, we propose a method to realize the population trapping (PT) in a two-level atom driven by a carrier envelope phase (CEP) locked laser pulse. We present detailed numerical results on the influence of CEP in different detuned atoms beyond the rotating wave approximation and find the population is strongly dependent on CEP, the detuning and the Rabi frequency. This allows us to choose proper parameters to realize three specific trapping states: upper trapping state, half trapping state and lower trapping state. To explain the fantastic influence of CEP, we present an analytical solution under weak-field approximation, which is consistent with the numerical solution. We further define the action quantity of the pulse acting on the atom as the integral for the interaction Hamiltonian and find the population varies approximatively linearly with the action quantity. This investigation provides directive significance for achieving PT at arbitrary quantum states and insightful schemes to regulate and control the quantum dynamics of atoms via accurately controlled optical field, and the results could be beneficial for applications to laser cooling, isotope separation and so on.

Quantum coherence and population trapping in three-photon processes

C. Champenois, Giovanna Morigi, Jürgen Eschner

The spectroscopic properties of a single tightly trapped atom are studied, when the electronic levels are coupled by three laser fields in an $N$-shaped configuration of levels, whereby a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type level system is weakly coupled to a metastable state. We show that depending on the laser frequencies the response can be tuned from coherent population trapping at two-photon resonance to a behavior at three photon resonance, where the metastable state can get almost unit occupation in a wide range of parameters. For certain parameter regimes the system switches spontaneously between dissipative and coherent dynamics over long time scales.
