Abstract

Recently, the existence of population-trapping states in a two-level system driven by a frequency-modulated field has been demonstrated. In this work we show such states can exist in a two-level atom driven by both an amplitude- and phase- modulated field.

Phase shift of the population oscillation and population trapping

Xianzhou Zhang, Hong-Min Jiang, Rao Jianguo +1 more

Using our recently developed time-dependent multilevel approach, we have calculated the phase shift of the population oscillation of the excited potassium atom in frequency-modulated fields when the modulation amplitude is suddenly changed. The numerical results are in good agreement with the measurements. A new way of realizing population trapping is suggested.

POPULATION TRAPPING PHENOMENA IN A TWO-LEVEL SYSTEM

LONG DE-SHUN, Ning Xi-Jing, 复旦大学现代物理研究所,上海200433

The critical criterion for realizing population trapping is deduced for a two-level system driven by a frequency-modulated laser field in terms of dressed atom model, followed by demonstrating the various population trapping behaviours under different conditions. Detailed numerical solutions of time-dependent Schr?idinger equation are found to be in good agreement with the analytical results.

Low-Frequency Coherence Excitation in the Ground State Manifold and Saturation of the Quasi-Two-Level Atom by a Resonant Field

R. N. Shakhmuratov, J. Odeurs, Romain Coussement +1 more

The excitation of the low-frequency coherence in the ground state atomic sublevels by a coherent field driving the transition between these sublevels and the remote excited state is considered. The condition of the population trapping in the dark, nonabsorbing, state, which is a particular coherence of the ground state sub-levels, is analyzed. It is shown that the saturated width of the dark resonance is much larger than the line width of the two-level atom saturated by a resonant field

Phase-Dependent Spectra in a Driven Two-Level Atom

Peng Zhou, S. Swain

We propose a method to observe phase-dependent spectra in resonance fluorescence, employing a two-level atom driven by a strong coherent field and a weak, amplitude-fluctuating field. The spectra are similar to those which occur in a squeezed vacuum, but avoid the problem of achieving squeezing over a $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ solid angle. The system shows other interesting features, such as pronounced gain without population inversion.

Multicolored Coherent Population Trapping in a Λ System Using Phase Modulated Fields

Harshawardhan Wanare

We demonstrate the simultaneous occurrence of coherent population trapping at a series of frequencies separated by modulation frequency of phase-modulated fields. The two arms of the system are coupled to two phase-modulated fields and the response of the atomic system to such fields is calculated nonperturbatively. A judicious choice of modulation characteristics allows one to selectively switch on or off the occurrence of coherent population trapping at specific frequencies. A new technique is developed to compute two-dimensional tridiagonal matrix equations. This generalized technique provides the vital methodology needed to calculate the response of such systems in the strong modulation regime and for arbitrary field strengths.
