Application of Jastrow wave functions to quantum lattice spin theories

Abstract

The use of variational wave functions that are products of overlapping locally correlated functions for studying the ground state of lattice spin theories is described. It is found that very accurate results can be obtained for very simple trial functions. For determining the energy, the method is superior to methods based on blocks.

New variational method for quasi-one-dimensional spin problems

V. Ya. Krivnov, А. А. Овчинников

A new variational method for determining the ground-state energy of quasi-1D systems is proposed. The method consists of decomposition of a lattice into non-interacting blocks. A trial wavefunction is the product of exact ground-state block functions multiplied by operator correlation factors. The ground-state energy of a spin-1/2 and fermionic particle ladder is evaluated. The calculation is very simple and gives energies with an accuracy of about 2% or even less.

Variational Jastrow coupled-cluster theory of quantum many-body systems

Yang Xian

We study many-body correlations in the ground state of a general quantum system of bosons or fermions by including an additional Jastrow function in our recently proposed variational coupled-cluster method. Our approach combines the advantages of state-dependent correlations in the coupled-cluster theory and of the strong, short-ranged correlations of the Jastrow function. We apply a generalized linked-cluster expansion for the Jastrow wave function and provide a detailed analysis for practical evaluation of the Hamiltonian expectation value as an energy functional of the Jastrow function and the bare density-distribution functions introduced and calculated in our earlier publications; a simple, first-order energy functional is derived and detailed formulas for the higher-order contributions are provided. Our energy functional does not suffer the divergence as most coupled-cluster calculations often do when applying to Hamiltonians with hardcore potentials. We also discuss possible applications of our technique, including applications to strongly correlated fermion systems.

Improved wave function for strongly correlated electronic systems

Kenji Kobayashi, Kaoru Iguchi

A scheme of optimization of a trial wave function in the variational Monte Carlo calculation is developed. It provides a more precise description of the ground state for strongly correlated electronic systems with highly improved trial wave function. A general type of variational wave function constructed from a linear combination of Slater determinants multiplied by Jastrow correlation factors is proposed. They can explicitly contain low-energy fluctuations and long-range correlations. Using this optimization method, we examine the properties of these wave functions by applying them to a one-dimensional Hubbard model for which the exact solution is available for comparison. It is found that these wave functions prove to be substantial improvements compared to the conventional Jastrow-type wave functions.

Entanglement Properties Of Quantum Many-Body Wave Functions

J. W. Clark, Aikaterini Mandilara, MANFRED L. RISTIG

Entanglement properties of the trial many-body wave functions in variational treatments of the transverse Ising model in two, three, and four dimensions are investigated. Based on data for magnetizations and correlation functions generated by for symmetry-breaking Hartree-Jastrow trial ground states, results are presented for several measures of bipartite entanglement, including the von Neumann entropy of a single spin in the lattice, the concurrence between two spins, and a lower bound on the localizable entanglement, as functions of coupling strength. A simple relation is established between the Hartree-Jastrow states and the nilpotent polynomial representation of multipartite entanglement. In addition, some general comments are made on the entanglement properties of classes of many-body wave functions commonly adopted in theories of strongly correlated quantum systems.

Using local operator fluctuations to identify wave function improvements

Kiel T. Williams, Lucas K. Wagner

A method is developed that allows analysis of quantum Monte Carlo simulations to identify errors in trial wave functions. The purpose of this method is to allow for the systematic improvement of variational wave functions by identifying degrees of freedom that are not well described by an initial trial state. We provide proof of concept implementations of this method by identifying the need for a Jastrow correlation factor and implementing a selected multideterminant wave function algorithm for small dimers that systematically decreases the variational energy. Selection of the two-particle excitations is done using the quantum Monte Carlo method within the presence of a Jastrow correlation factor and without the need to explicitly construct the determinants. We also show how this technique can be used to design compact wave functions for transition metal systems. This method may provide a route to analyze and systematically improve descriptions of complex quantum systems in a scalable way.

Structure of the ground-state wave function of quantum fluids and "exact" numerical methods

L. Reatto

The problem of how to extract information on the structure of the exact ground-state wave function of a Bose fluid from the results of Green's-function Monte Carlo computations is considered. Use of the criterion of maximum overlap of the exact ground state with an extended Jastrow function leads to certain equalities for correlation functions. By using methods borrowed from theories of classical fluids various schemes are proposed that permit the determination of the "best" Jastrow function. The case of Fermi statistics is also considered.
