Lasing without inversion: A useful concept?

Paul Mandel

Published Sep 1, 1993• 138 citations

Abstract

The historical development that led to the modern concept of amplification and losing without inversion is reviewed. The two basic mechanisms for amplification without inversion and their theoretical formulation are discussed. Finally, the three experiments that confirm the occurrence of these effects are described.

Laser without inversion: a useful concept?

Paul Mandel

The modern concept of amplification and laser generation of coherent light without inversion is considered in the context of the historical developments that led to the emergence of these ideas. The two main mechanisms of amplification without inversion and their theoretical formulation are discussed. A description of three experiments confirming the existence of these effects is given.

We review the recent achievements both in the theory and experiment on lasing without inversion. We discuss also the potential applications of these novel laser sources and the prospects for the further development of this domain.

Basic models of lasing without inversion: general form of amplification condition and problem of self-consistency

Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Paul Mandel

We derive an amplification condition which generalizes the traditional population inversion requirement for the basic schemes of inversionless amplification. We develop a self-consistent quantum approach for the description of such schemes and demonstrate the limitations of the traditional phenomenological approach.

Lasing without inversion

J. Mompart, R. Corbalán

This review paper is devoted to amplification and lasing without population inversion involving atomic transitions in gas media. We start by discussing the main motivation in inversionless lasing research, namely, the generation of short-wavelength laser light. Then, we review the basic physics of inversionless lasing in two-level and, eventually, in three- and multilevel atomic configurations. Finally, we summarize the current state of the art of LWI experiments and indicate the main difficulties with respect to short-wavelength laser generation.

Mirrorless Lasing: A Theoretical Perspective

Mirrorless lasing has been a topic of particular interest for about a decade due to promising new horizons for quantum science and applications. In this work, we review first-principles theory that describes this phenomenon, and discuss degenerate mirrorless lasing in a vapor of Rb atoms, the mechanisms of amplification of light generated in the medium with population inversion between magnetic sublevels within the $${{D}_{2}}$$ line, and challenges associated with experimental realization.

Lasing without population inversion

Wojciech Gawlik

The paper reviews various schemes of lasing without population inversion with particular emphasis on these which seem to be most promising from the practical point of view. It is shown that in some cases one can attribute the lasing to the population inversion in an appropriate reference frame.
