Relaxation of photon echoes in weakly ionized noble-gas plasmas

Abstract

Photon echoes generated from visible transitions in the noble gases helium, neon, and argon are observed and the collisional relaxation rates are measured. The photon echoes are excited on transitions initiating from metastable states which are populated by electron impact in an rf discharge. The photon-echo intensity is measured as a function of time after the discharge is turned off and as a function of gas pressure. The reduction of the echo intensity in these two experiments is attributed to relaxation of the metastable population in the afterglow and dephasing collisions, respectively. The dependence of the photon-echo damping time on transition wavelength and perturber gas is interpreted by means of a simple van der Waals model for the excited-atom and perturber-gas interaction.

Photon-echo studies of collisional relaxation in weakly ionized noble-gas mixtures

M. R. Woodworth

Photon-echo relaxation rates are measured in weakly ionized plasmas of binary mixtures of noble gases, in which the photon echo generated on a transition in one noble-gas species is damped primarily by atoms of the second species. The special cases of pure krypton and xenon are extensions of previous work in pure helium, neon, and argon. With the exception of mixtures with helium as the perturber, measured relaxation rates are consistent with collisional line-broadening calculations.

Photon echoes in plasmas: collisional relaxation in helium on 2 ^3S_1–3 ^3P_012

Thomas M. Baer, Isaac D. Abella

Photon echoes are observed for the first time in plasmas on atomic metastable states populated by rf discharge in helium at pressures from 0.01 to 0.5 Torr. The echoes are generated by tunable dye-laser excitation. The collision cross section for echo dephasing on the He 2 (3)S-3 (3)P transition at 3888 A by collisions with ground-state atoms is 5 x 10(-14) cm(2) +/- 20%. Echoes are also observed on the 3P metastable manifold in neon.

Investigation of elastic and depolarizing collisions in strontium using broadband stimulated photon echoes

M. Saïdi, J. Keller, J.-L. Le Gouët

Elastic and depolarizing collisions between excited strontium (5s 5p 3P1) and noble gases are investigated in a broadband stimulated photon echo (SPE) experiment. The stimulated photon echo signal produced under broadband (incoherent) excitation is calculated in the weak field regime both for correlated and for uncorrelated pulses using a simple statistical model for the light field. The relaxation of the echo signal due to elastic collisions is considered and the complete development of the corresponding propagator is derived. The collisional velocity changes concerning the total population and the alignment are compared precisely in the SPE experiment and the corresponding relaxation rates are measured. A simple long-range Van der Waals potential accounts for population scattering data ; total elastic scattering cross sections are deduced from the comparison of experiment and calculation (σelAr = 583(27) Å2; σ elHe = 190(6) Å2). The collisional model is extended for light perturbers to include both the small angle classical scattering region and the diffractive scattering region. Total rates for destruction of alignment are measured in an auxiliary photon echo experiment (σ (2)He = 91 (4) Å2; ; σ(2) Ne = 102 (14) A2 ; σ(2)Ar = 267 (13 ) Å2 ; σ(2)Kr = 329 (21) Å2 ; σ(2)Xc = 370 (13) Å2). SPE data for depolarization are compared with a calculation based upon a long-range anisotropic model potential.

Relative noble-gas-induced broadening of the D lines of atomic lithium

Ravinder Kachru, T. J. Chen, THOMAS W. MOSSBERG +1 more

Photon echoes have been employed to measure the relative broadening rates of the lithium $D$ lines perturbed by the noble gases. We find that, for each noble-gas perturber, the ${D}_{1}$-line and ${D}_{2}$-line photon-echo-relaxation rates are identical. Our results are compared with those obtained in line-shape studies of pressure broadening.

An optical echo study of caesium-noble gas collisions

K. W. Godfrey

The work described in this thesis is an experimental study of collisional relaxation of two-excitation-pulse optical echoes on the caesium 6S-7P transitions perturbed by noble gases using the echo polarisation rotation discrimination technique. Theoretical preliminaries include the development of a Schrddinger interaction representation theory of the formation of echoes resulting from two resonant excitation pulses applied to a two-state system. Rotation of the echo polarisation enables a polariser to be used to discriminate against the excitation pulses in favour of the echo. To illustrate the mechanisms behind this rotation, a simplified theory based on a nearly degenerate two level system is developed. The theory of collisional relaxation of echoes by phase interrupting and quantum diffractive velocity changing collisions is introduced. In traditional line profile spectroscopy the former type of collision cause line broadening whilst the effects of the latter are unobservable. The experimental work of this thesis involves the measurement of collisional relaxation of two-excitation-pulse echoes on the caesium 6Si/2-7Pi/2 (459nm) and 6S1/2-7P3/2 (455nm) transitions perturbed by low pressure (< 1 torr) of noble gas (He, A t or Xe). The experiments were carried out using a range of interpulse times from about 30 to 200ns. The broadening constants, determined to about 3% from the relaxation measurements, show significant discrepancies with traditional line profile measurements. For the longer interpulse times there is evidence for the quantum diffractive velocity changing aspects of the collisions. The associated cross-sections and average magnitudes of the mean velocity changes are estimated from the data.

Study of the rates of collisional decay of population, orientation, and alignment by stimulated photon echo in a molecular gas

L. S. Vasilenko, Н. Н. Рубцова, Хворостов Евгений Борисович

A stimulated photon echo technique with specially selected linear polarizations of the coherent resonant driver pulses is used to study depolarizing collisions in the molecular gas SF 6 and in mixtures of it with buffer He and Xe. The collisional decay rates of the population, orientation, and alignment in an ensemble of gas particles are determined for the first time in a single experiment. These relaxation rates are measured as a function of the longitudinal translational velocities of the resonant particles. To within the experimental accuracy, no significant dependence of the collisional decay rates on the translational velocities of the particles was observed. This result confirms the conventional theoretical approach to depolarizing collisions. In pure SF 6 the decay rates for the orientation and alignment were lower than the relaxation constant for collisions involving a change in the longitudinal velocity (elastic collisions) that is known from experimental observations of the ordinary photon echo. This means that only some of the elastic collisions participate in destroying the multipole moments of the levels. Evidence is found that the relaxation of the multipole moments created by polarized radiation in a resonant medium of molecular SF 6 gas depends on j , the total angular momentum of the level.
