Destructive Interference in a Λ-Type Coherently Driven Mazer

Abstract

We derive an expression of the interaction between a quantum cavity field and an ultracold Λ-type three-level atom in which two upper levels are coupled by a coherent driving field. The effects of the driving-induced atomic coherence on the atomic emission probability are investigated. It is found that, due to the driving-induced atomic coherence, there are two transition channels for the atom interacting with the cavity field. Between the two transition channels, there is a quantum interference, which is a destructive interference. This destructive quantum interference suppresses the emission of the atom. The atomic emission probability decreases with the increasing driving field.

Emission probability and photon statistics of a coherently driven mazer

Jin Xiong, Zhi‐Ming Zhang

The idea of a mazer is put forward with particular reference to the question of the driving-induced atomic coherence, which is established by a coherent driving field. The interaction of a quantum cavity field and an ultracold V-type three-level atom in which two levels are coupled by a coherent driving field, is derived. Its general quantum theory is established and the atomic emission probability and photon statistics are calculated and analysed. It is found that the mazer based on this driving-induced atomic coherence shows new features. There is a non-vanishing probability for the atom emitting a photon in the cavity even when the resonance condition is not fulfilled (here the resonance condition means that the cavity length is an integer multiple of half the atomic de Broglie wavelength). Under the resonance condition, the atomic emission probability has two sets of resonance peaks. For a very strong coherent driving field, the emission of the atom can be forbidden. As to the photon statistics, when the driving field is not very strong, the driving-induced atomic coherence reduces the photon number fluctuations of the cavity field. The photon statistics exhibits strong sub-Poissonian behaviour. In the region considered here, it can even be sub-Poissonian for any cavity length. However, when the driving field is too strong, the sub-Poissonian property may disappear.

Emission Probability of the Cascade Three-Level-Atom Mazer with Injected Atomic Coherence

Jin Xiong, Zhi‐Ming Zhang

We investigate the effects of the injected atomic coherence on the atomic emission probability of the micromaser injected with ultracold cascade three-level atoms by considering that the atoms are initially in the coherent superposition states of the two upper levels. We show that there is no interference between the transitions from the two upper levels to the lowest level. In the large atom-field-detuning case, the atomic emission probability decreases as the coherent parameter increases. In the zero atom-field-detuning case, the atomic emission probability has three sets of resonance peaks. The reason for these results has been explained.

Quantum-mechanical interference effects in the spontaneous-emission spectrum of a driven atom

Shi-Yao Zhu, Lorenzo M. Narducci, Marlan O. Scully

We study the influence of quantum interference on the spontaneous emission from an excited two-level atom when either the atomic upper or lower level is coupled by a coherent field to a third, usually higher-lying, state. In the case of the upper level coupling, destructive quantum interference between two competing decay amplitudes produces a dark line in the emission spectrum, a phenomenon that should not be confused with the well known population trapping, and a narrowing of one of the two side lobes that make up the spectral profile. Quantum interference is absent, instead, in the case of the lower level coupling, and the spectrum modified by the external driving field is just the incoherent superposition of two Lorentzian lines. We suggest a physical interpretation of these results. In addition, we compare the analytic predictions of the simplest nontrivial versions of these models with more realistic but nonanalytic descriptions and show, numerically, that the interference effects persist in the upper level case even when additional complications are taken into account.

Coherent control of tunneling and traversal of ultracold atoms through vacuum-induced potentials

Fazal Badshah, Muhammad Irfan, Sajid Qamar +1 more

We study the tunneling and traversal of ultracold $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type three-level atoms through vacuum-induced potentials in a high-$Q$ mazer cavity. In particular, we discuss the effects of driving-induced atomic coherence on the passage of ultracold atoms through a high-$Q$ mazer cavity. We consider phase time to study quantum tunneling which exhibits interesting features due to atomic coherence. For example, negative phase time appears for transmission of the atoms in both excited and ground states due to the presence of atomic coherence. Further, for certain values of the driving field, it is found that the phase tunneling time shows an alternate subclassical and superclassical traversal behavior with the increase in atomic momentum.
