Abstract

A scheme for control of the transfer function of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer (F-P) using an independent light beam (optical pumping), tuned in frequency to the absorption band from the excited level of resonant medium, has been suggested. The possibility of switching operating modes of the interferometer (differential amplification, discriminator, optical bistability) has been shown.

Absorption optical bistability in an interferometer with light-induced relaxation of the nonlinearity

Vladimir Yu. Bazhenov, M. S. Soskin

A theoretical investigation is made of an optical absorption bistability in a Fabry–Perot interferometer filled with a nonlinear medium exhibiting reversible optical bleaching due to interaction with radiations with two different wavelengths. It is shown that the optical feedback efficiency can be enhanced, which makes it possible to reduce significantly the requirements in respect of the level of the residual absorption by the nonlinear medium.

Color multistability in Fabry-Perot interferometer

Агишев Игорь Николаевич, S. M. Karpuck, Alexander S. Rubanov +2 more

A scheme for the realization of optical bistability in a nonlinear Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer has been considered under conditions of multifrequency excitation. The dependencies of the spectral-components intensities, their ratios, and the total intensity at F-P output on the input intensity have been analyzed. The possibility to realize the optical control of radiation color as perceived by the eye has been shown.

Signal Processing With A Nonlinear Fabry-Perot

E. Garmire

In this paper we consider the nonlinear Fabry-Perot and its applications to optical signal and image processing. This paper addresses the signal processing aspects of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer with emphasis on image processing. The device geometry is shown in Figure 1. A thin nonlinear medium, whose refractive index is a function of the light intensity inside the Fabry-Perot is sandwiched between two plane parallel mirrors. The output as a function of input is shown in Fig. 2, for two different values of the difference between the Fabry-Perot low intensity resonance and the incident wavelength. The bistable curve in 2a is the origin of the term optical bistability and makes possible an optical memory, in which the output is a function of the history of the device. The Figure 2b represents a typical nonlinear transfer curve which may be used for signal processing. It can be seen that small changes in the input intensity Ic make large changes in the output intensity.

Transverse effects under four-wave coupling in the nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer

O. G. Romanov, Alexei L. Tolstik

Specific features of the light-beam transverse structure transformation in the process of four-wave coupling in the Fabry-Perot interferometer with a resonant nonlinearity under conditions of bifurcation of the symmetry breaking and optical bistability are analyzed. The asymmetric regimes of the interaction, characterized by a difference both in the integrated transmission functions of the nonlinear interferometer for two light beams with equal intensities and in the spatial intensity distribution at the exit of the interferometer, are considered.

Dynamic behavior of the nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer with heavily doped n-GaAs internal layer under 20 ns laser pulses excitation has been studied. Optical bistability with less than 10 ns switch-OFF time has been demonstrated.

Polarization self-oscillations in an anisotropic interferometer with a resonant medium

Ганчеренок Игорь Иванович, O. G. Romanov, Alexei L. Tolstik +2 more

The dynamics of an anisotropic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with three- and four-level resonant media has been studied. The origination conditions of complex spatial-temporal polarization dynamic operating modes of the FPI have been analysed at constant intensity of the input light beam. It has been shown that the intensity oscillations are conditioned by the concurrent components of resonance nonlinearity, which are due to population of different excited states of molecules.
