Superfluidity of Repulsing “Quasifermions”

Abstract

It is shown that a gas of interacting bosons with weakly nonlinear commutation relations behaves as a Fermi gas rather than a Bose gas if there is a gap in the frequency spectrum. Despite the quasifermionic behavior of such a gas (absence of Bose condensation, Fermi-like distributions, etc.) superfluidity is predicted. Some systems with such quasifermions are discussed.

Spectrum on elementary excitations in superfluid Bose--Fermi systems

Ernst A. Pashitskii

The spectrum of elementary excitations in the system of interacting Bose- and Fermi-particles was obtained at a temperature of absolute zero (Dose- condensation being taken into account by means of the Bogolyabov canonic transformations. In terms of a model of permeable spheres'' with finite repulsion it(is shown that the boson spectrum omega (p) in a definite region of parameter has the minimum at p = 0. By selecting parameters one succeeds in obtaining a quite satisfactory quantitative agreement of the theoretical and experimental spectra for superfluid helium. If in this case the interaction between fermions at infinity is of attraction character, then under certain conditions sustained longitudinal collective excitations of Pose-type with a finite gap'' in the energy spectrum may exist in the superfluid fermion subsystem. Possibility of appearance of similar excitations in superfluid nuclear matter of neutron stars (pulsars) due to gravitational interaction between nucleons is discussed. (auth)

The Superfluid State of a Bose Liquid as a Superposition of a Single-Particle and Pair Coherent Condensates

Ernst A. Pashitskii, Stefan V. Mashkevich, S. I. Vilchynskyy

One considers the superfluid (SF) state of a Bose liquid with a strong repulsion between bosons, in which at T=0, along with a weak single-particle Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), there exists an intensive pair coherent condensate (PCC), analogous to the Cooper condensate in a Fermi liquid with an attraction between the fermions. Such a PCC emerges in a system of bosons due to an oscillating sign-changing momentum dependence of the Fourier component of the pair interaction potential, which is characteristic of a certain family of repulsion potentials. In such cases, the Fourier component is negative in some domain of nonzero momentum transfer, which corresponds to an effective attraction. The collective effects of renormalization (``screening'') of the initial interaction lead to a suppression of the repulsion and an enhancement of the effective attraction. It is the ratio of the BEC density to the full density of the liquid $n_0/n\ll 1$ that is used as a small parameter---unlike in the Bogolyubov theory for a quasi-ideal Bose gas, in which the small parameter is the ratio of the number of supracondensate excitations to the number of particles in an intensive BEC, $(n-n_0)/n_0\ll 1$. A closed system of nonlinear integral equations for the normal and anomalous self-energy parts is obtained, in the framework of a renormalized perturbation theory built on combined hydrodynamic and field variables. In the framework of the hard-spheres model, a spectrum of quasiparticles is obtained, which is in good accordance with the experimental spectrum of elementary excitations in superfluid $^4$He. The question of applicability of the Landau criterion in the absence of quantum vortices is discussed.

Energy Spectrum and Phase Transition of Superfluid Fermi Gas of Atoms on Noncommutative Space

Yan-Gang Miao

Based on the Bogoliubov non-ideal gas model, we discuss the energy spectrum and phase transition of the superfluid Fermi gas of atoms with a weak attractive interaction on the canonical noncommutative space.Because the interaction of a BCS-type superfluid Fermi gas originates from a pair of Fermionic quasi-particles with opposite momenta and spins, the Hamiltonian of the Fermi gas on the noncommutative space can be described in terms of the ordinary creation and annihilation operators related to the commutative space, while the noncommutative effect appears only in the coefficients of the interacting Hamiltonian. As a result, we can rigorously solve the energy spectrum of the Fermi gas on the noncommutative space exactly following the way adopted on the commutative space without the use of perturbation theory. In particular, different from the previous results on the noncommutative degenerate electron gas and superconductor where only the first order corrections of the ground state energy level and energy gap were derived, we obtain the nonperturbative energy spectrum for the noncommutative superfluid Fermi gas, and find that each energy level contains a corrected factor of cosine function of noncommutative parameters. In addition, our result shows that the energy gap becomes narrow and the critical temperature of phase transition from a superfluid state to an ordinary fluid state decreases when compared with that in the commutative case.

The excitation spectrum in a weakly interacting bose gas

Nizom Taylanov, Z. Kanokov, S Kh Urinov

Abstract In the work the problem of phenomenon of superfluidity is considered within the framework of Bose-Einshtein condensation, theoretically. We discuss the main features of the excitation spectrum in a weakly interacting Bose gas. Our analysis will show that the healing length, which determines the length scale below which collective phenomena are physically more relevant than free-particle-like ones. Since the weakly interacting gas of Bose particles has been mapped onto a gas of noninteracting quasiparticles, we are able to analyze the thermodynamics of the system and find how temperature affect the depletion of the condensate.

Quantum Monte Carlo studies of superfluid Fermi gases

Siyuan Chang, Vijay R. Pandharipande, Joseph Carlson +1 more

We report results of quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the ground state of dilute Fermi gases with attractive short-range two-body interactions. The strength of the interaction is varied to study different pairing regimes which are characterized by the product of the $s$-wave scattering length and the Fermi wave vector, $a{k}_{F}$. We report results for the ground-state energy, the pairing gap $\ensuremath{\Delta}$, and the quasiparticle spectrum. In the weak-coupling regime, $1∕a{k}_{F}<\ensuremath{-}1$, we obtain Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid and the energy gap $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ is much smaller than the Fermi gas energy ${E}_{\mathrm{FG}}$. When $a>0$, the interaction is strong enough to form bound molecules with energy ${E}_{\mathrm{mol}}$. For $1∕a{k}_{F}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.5$, we find that weakly interacting composite bosons are formed in the superfluid gas with $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ and gas energy per particle approaching $\ensuremath{\mid}{E}_{\mathrm{mol}}\ensuremath{\mid}∕2$. In this region, we seem to have Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of molecules. The behavior of the energy and the gap in the BCS-to-BEC transition region, $\ensuremath{-}0.5<1∕a{k}_{F}<0.5$, is discussed.

Quasiparticle spectrum and dynamical stability of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a degenerate Fermi gas

Christopher P. Search, Han Pu, W. Zhang +1 more

The quasiparticle excitations and dynamical stability of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a quantum degenerate Fermi gas of atoms at zero temperature is studied. The Fermi gas is assumed to be either in the normal state or to have undergone a phase transition to a superfluid state by forming Cooper pairs. The quasiparticle excitations of the Bose-Einstein condensate exhibit a dynamical instability due to a resonant exchange of energy and momentum with quasiparticle excitations of the Fermi gas. The stability regime for the bosons depends on whether the Fermi gas is in the normal state or in the superfluid state. We show that the energy gap in the quasiparticle spectrum for the superfluid state stabilizes the low-energy excitations of the condensate. In the stable regime, we calculate the boson quasiparticle spectrum, which is modified by the fluctuations in the density of the Fermi gas.
