Abstract

Abstract The spectrum of the fluorescent radiation of a single trapped 24 Mg + -ion at low excitation intensity was investigated. The measurement was performed by heterodyning the fluorescent radiation with a sideband of the single mode laser radiation used to excite the ion, resulting in a linewidth of 6 Hz. Under identical experimental conditions, the antibunching in the photon statistics of the fluorescent radiation was also investigated. Heterodyne detection and photon correlation measurement are complementary featuring either the wave or the particle nature of the radiation. The combination of both techniques will allow to measure squeezing in resonance fluorescence.

Heterodyne measurement of the resonance fluorescence of a single ion

J. T. Höffges, H. W. Baldauf, W. Lange +1 more

The three-dimensional localization of a single ion to the Lamb–Dicke limit in a radio-frequency trap has been combined with the technique of heterodyne detection to provide high-resolution spectroscopy of the fluorescent light of the ion. A coherent component with a linewidth of 0·7 Hz, corresponding to elastic scattering of the incident laser light, was observed in the heterodyne signal. The method may be extended to observe the narrow sidebands related to the secular motion in the trap, yielding information on the dynamics of the ion. Quantum properties of the fluorescent radiation can be detected by probing higher order field correlations. As an example we investigated the phenomenon of antibunching which appears as intensity anticorrelations of the emitted radiation. A measurement of intensity cross-correlations of the fluorescent light superimposed with a weak local oscillator is expected to permit the observation of squeezing in the resonance fluorescence of a single ion.

Motional Sidebands and Direct Measurement of the Cooling Rate in the Resonance Fluorescence of a Single Trapped Ion

Ch. Raab, Jürgen Eschner, J. Bolle +3 more

Resonance fluorescence of a single trapped ion is spectrally analyzed using a heterodyne technique. Motional sidebands due to the oscillation of the ion in the harmonic trap potential are observed in the fluorescence spectrum. From the width of the sidebands the cooling rate is obtained and found to be in agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Spectrum of resonance fluorescence from a single trapped ion

J. I. Cirac, R. Blatt, A. S. Parkins +1 more

The spectrum of resonance fluorescence of a single trapped and laser-cooled ion is studied theoretically. The quantum motion of the trapped particle manifests itself in the form of narrow motional sidebands in the fluorescence spectrum. For our calculations it is assumed that the ion is confined to dimensions much smaller than the optical wavelength (Lamb-Dicke limit) and the approach is valid for multilevel systems, general trapping potentials, and for both traveling-wave and standing-wave configurations. The motional sidebands in the spectrum have asymmetric amplitudes and this asymmetry is shown to depend on the ion energy, the detector position, and the choice of standing- or traveling-wave laser excitation.

Intensity-Field Correlation of Single-Atom Resonance Fluorescence

S. Gerber, D. Rotter, L. Slodička +3 more

We report measurements of an intensity-field correlation function of the resonance fluorescence of a single trapped 138Ba+ ion. Detection of a photon prepares the atom in its ground state, and we observe its subsequent evolution under interaction with a laser field of well-defined phase. We record the regression of the resonance fluorescence source field. This provides a direct measurement of the field of the radiating dipole of a single atom and exhibits its strong nonclassical behavior. In the setup, an interference measurement is conditioned on the detection of a fluorescence photon.

Resonance fluorescence spectrum of a trapped ion undergoing quantum jumps

V. Bühner, Chr. Tamm

We experimentally investigate the resonance fluorescence spectrum of single ${}^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$ and ${}^{172}\mathrm{Yb}$ ions that are laser cooled to the Lamb-Dicke regime in a radiofrequency trap. While the fluorescence scattering of ${}^{172}\mathrm{Yb}$ is continuous, the ${}^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$ fluorescence is interrupted by quantum jumps because a nonvanishing rate of spontaneous transitions leads to electron shelving in the metastable hyperfine sublevel ${}^{2}{D}_{3/2}(F=2).$ The average duration of the resulting dark periods can be varied by changing the intensity of a repumping laser field. Optical heterodyne detection is employed to analyze the fluorescence spectrum near the Rayleigh elastic scattering peak. It is found that the stochastic modulation of the fluorescence emission by quantum jumps gives rise to a Lorentzian component in the fluorescence spectrum, and that the linewidth of this component varies according to the average duration of the dark fluorescence periods. The experimental observations are in quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions.
