Nonlinear spin excitations in finite Heisenberg chains

Abstract

In the recent literature, there have been discussions of nonlinear spin excitations in one-dimensional, anisotropic Heisenberg spin chains. These have the character of localized excitations, which emerge from the time-dependent classical equations of motion. We show that for a given frequency, in a finite spin chain one has a hierarchy of nonlinear excitations, whose envelopes have the appearance of a one soliton, two soliton,..., states. Also, we consider the nature of these nonlinear excitations in an applied magnetic field of frequency \ensuremath{\omega}, and explore aspects of the transient behavior of the system in response to a time varying external field. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Continuum-field description of one-dimensional dimerized spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Alexei K. Kolezhuk

Effective nonlinear field theory for a semiclassical long-wavelength description of one-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets with dimerized ground states is derived within an approach using two-site coherent states. The method is applied to bond-alternating anisotropic spin chains in presence of external magnetic field and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Linear and nonlinear excitations in singlet and magnetic phases are studied. Soliton solutions are found and their properties under semiclassical quantization are discussed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Excitations for the one-dimensional S = 1 pseudo-Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain

E. V. Orlenko, Fedor E. Orlenko, George G. Zegrya

We are interested in the anisotropic S=1 antiferromagnetic chain. System of particles with an arbitrary spin is described directly from the first principles, based on the symmetry law. The ground state of the one-dimensional S=1 pseudo-Heisenberg antiferromagnet with single-ion anisotropy is calculated. Excitations of the chain in the form of nonlinear spin waves and, in particular, the possibility of a soliton solution is considered.

Using solitons for manipulating qubits

Alessandro Cuccoli, Davide Nuzzi, Ruggero Vaia +1 more

Many proposals for quantum devices are based on qubits that are physically realized by the spin magnetic moment of some quantum object. In this case, one of the most often adopted strategies for manipulating qubits is that of using external magnetic fields. However, selectively applying a field just to one qubit may be a practically unattainable goal, as it is, for instance, in most solid-state based setups. In this work, we present a proposal for using nonlinear excitations of solitonic type to accomplish the above task. Our scheme entails the generation of a dynamical soliton in a classical spin-chain which is locally coupled with one qubit: as the soliton runs through, the qubit behaves, due to its interaction with the chain, as if it were subject to a magnetic field with a time dependence that follows from the soliton's features. We here present results for the time evolution of the qubit density-matrix induced by the overall dynamics of the above scheme.

Anisotropic quantum spin chains

J. Kurmann, Gerhard H. Muller, H. Thomas +2 more

We have studied two models for anisotropic quantum spin chains. (i) XY-chain with a field in the plane: The magnetization of the ferromagnet behaves as h1/3 for small fields, in agreement with scaling laws. The antiferromagnet shows a critical field at which the ground state is a simple Néel state and which separates power law from exponential decay of spatial correlations. (ii) Anisotropic XY-chain: The dynamic z-component spin correlation function can be decomposed into a spin wave and a soliton contribution. The nature of quantum soliton excitations is studied and their form compared to soliton solutions of classical equations of motion.

Quantum gates controlled by spin chain soliton excitations

Alessandro Cuccoli, Davide Nuzzi, Ruggero Vaia +1 more

Propagation of soliton-like excitations along spin chains has been proposed as a possible way for transmitting both classical and quantum information between two distant parties with negligible dispersion and dissipation. In this work, a somewhat different use of solitons is considered. Solitons propagating along a spin chain realize an effective magnetic field, well localized in space and time, which can be exploited as a means to manipulate the state of an external spin (i.e., a qubit) that is weakly coupled to the chain. We have investigated different couplings between the qubit and the chain, as well as different soliton shapes, according to a Heisenberg chain model. It is found that symmetry properties strongly affect the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, and the most suitable setups for implementing single qubit quantum gates are singled out.

Controlling soliton excitations in Heisenberg spin chains through the magic angle

Jing Lu, Lan Zhou, Le‐Man Kuang +1 more

We study the nonlinear dynamics of collective excitation in an N -site XXZ quantum spin chain, which is manipulated by an oblique magnetic field. We show that, when the tilted field is applied along the magic angle, theta_{0}=+/-arccossqrt[13] , the anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain becomes isotropic and thus an freely propagating spin wave is stimulated. Also, in the regime of tilted angles larger and smaller than the magic angle, two types of nonlinear excitations appear: bright and dark solitons.
