Dark and bright solitons in resonantly absorbing gratings

Abstract

We consider an optical medium consisting of a periodic refractive-index grating and a periodic set of thin layers of two-level systems resonantly interacting with the electromagnetic field. Recently, it has been shown that such a system gives rise to a vast variety of stable bright solitons. In this work, we demonstrate that the system has another very unusual property: stable bright solitons can coexist with stable continuous-wave (cw) states and stable dark solitons (DS's). Depending on the parameters' values, a DS frequency band coexists (without overlap) with one or two bright-soliton bands. Quiescent (standing) DS's are found in an analytical form, and moving ones are obtained numerically. Simulations show that a considerable part of the DS solutions are completely stable against arbitrary small perturbations. The fact that this system supports both stable bright and dark solitons for the same parameters values may find interesting applications in photonics.

Coexistence of bright, dark, hybrid bright-dark cavity solitons and crystals in a single field ring resonator

Mansour Eslami, Gian‐Luca Oppo

Cavity solitons in ring resonators have revolutionized frequency comb generation and its applications. Coexistence of bright and dark cavity solitons in these devices is, in general, associated with vectorial configurations with more than one optical field resonated in the cavity. We demonstrate the coexistence of stable bright, stable dark, and stable hybrid bright-dark cavity solitons in a single resonated field device formed by a three-level medium in a micro-resonator with normal dispersion. Each of these solitons displays unusually wide regions of stability and a multitude of secondary localized structures, including families of soliton crystals leading to an unprecedented variety of possible frequency combs in a single photonic device. Of the many possible soliton crystals, the most striking is a periodic sequence of dark cavity solitons found at huge distances from the stability region of the single dark soliton.

Two-Frequency Bright and Dark Solitons in a Three-Level Atomic System

Nadeem A. Ansari, R.A. Sammut

The intensity-dependent refractive index is calculated for a Kerr-like medium composed of a closed three-level atomic system in V-configuration and it is shown that two optical waves of different frequencies can be mutually-trapped in the form of bright and dark spatial solitons.

Standing and Moving Gap Solitons in Resonantly Absorbing Gratings

Alexander E. Kozhekin, Gershon Kurizki, Boris A. Malomed

We present hitherto unknown forms of soliton dynamics in the forbidden frequency gap of a Bragg reflector, modified by periodic layers of near-resonant two-level systems (TLS). Remarkably, even extremely low TLS densities create an allowed band within the forbidden gap. This spectrum gives rise, for any Bragg reflectivity, to a vast family of stable gap solitons, both standing and moving, having a unique analytic form, an arbitrary pulse area, and inelastic collision properties. These findings suggest new possibilities of transmission control, noise filtering, or ``dynamical cavities'' (self-traps) for both weak and strong signal pulses.

Effects of the near-dipole–dipole interaction on gap solitons in resonantly absorbing gratings

Jing Cheng, Jianying Zhou

Gap solitons can exist in a periodic refractive-index grating modified by periodic layers of near-resonant two-level systems. In this work, we include the effect of the density-dependent near-dipole-dipole (NDD) interaction in order to generalize this model. For certain values of the grating parameters, we find that the NDD interaction significantly modifies the frequency bands in which gap solitons can exist. The difference between the model with and without the NDD interaction is discussed. The stability of gap solitons is studied numerically.

Collisions of spatial solitons in optically induced lattices

O. G. Romanov

We present the theoretical model of coherent interactions of the light beams in a two-level resonant medium, taking into account a spatial-periodic modulation of the parameters of nonlinear medium in an interference field as well as nonlinear behavior of refractive index and absorption coefficient due to optical bleaching. As evidenced by the results of investigations described in this work, the process of light beams interaction via scattering from dynamically-induced optical gratings in two-level resonant medium is characterized by a number of interesting features like mutual attraction and repulsion, irradiation of additional beams probably due to soliton-soliton diffraction mode, formation of dark spatial solitons in the mode of defocusing interaction that can be used for all-optical control over the spatial structure of laser beams
