Abstract

We present a compact source of polarization-entangled photon pairs at a wavelength of 805 nm using a violet single-mode laser diode as the pump source of type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The source exhibits entanglement and pair-rate comparable to conventional systems utilizing large frame ion lasers thus significantly increases the practicality of novel quantum information or quantum metrology applications.

A compact source of polarization-entangled photon pairs at a wavelength of 856 nm is realized using a frequency-doubled laser diode as the pump source for cavity-enhanced type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Our setup generates photon pairs with entanglement visibility of ⩾95% and with count rates comparable to those of standard experiments based on large-frame ion lasers.

Compact source of polarization-entangled photon pairs

Pavel Trojek, Mohamed Bourennane, Christian Kurtsiefer +1 more

A compact source of polarization-entangled photon pairs is developed using a blue single-mode laser diode (/spl lambda/ = 402 nm, P = 30 mW) as the pump source of a beta-barium-borate (BBO) nonlinear optical crystal . Using the technique to optimize the collection efficiency, the created photon pairs are coupled into single-mode optical fibers, which are directly connected to quenched silicon avalanche photodiodes (Si APDs). The entanglement of the generated photon pairs was tested with the measurement of the polarization correlations in H/V and +45/spl deg// -45/spl deg/ basis and by violating the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH)-type Bell inequality. This compact, robust and economic source can be employed in any application of quantum information and quantum communication, in particular in practicable entanglement based quantum key distribution.

Broadband pumped polarization entangled photon-pair source in a linear beam displacement interferometer

Alexander Lohrmann, Chithrabhanu Perumangatt, Aitor Villar +1 more

We experimentally demonstrate a source of polarization entangled photon-pairs based on a single periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystal pumped with a broadband, free running laser diode. The crystal is placed within a linear beam-displacement interferometer and emits photon-pairs based on type-0 spontaneous parametric downconversion. We observe pair rates of 0.56 Mpairs/s/mW in a single spatial mode with a polarization visibility of 97.7% over a spectral range of 100 nm. This experiment demonstrates a pathway toward observing gigacount rates of polarization entangled photon pairs by using high-power free-running laser diodes with fast multiplexed detectors.

Multipli-entangled photon spontaneous parametric down-conversion source

Michael L. Fanto, Reinhard K. Erdmann, Paul M. Alsing +2 more

In this work, we discuss a novel compact source that generates six pairs of entangled photons via spontaneous parametric down-conversion from a single pass of a pump beam through a crystal assembly. The experimental demonstrations reported are at 810 nm so as to utilize high quantum efficiency Si-APD detectors, but the design can be readily implemented in other wavelength regimes including the telecom bands near 1550 nm. An immediate application of this source enables particular multi-qubit cluster states to be generated in a highly compact unidirectional configuration. This can significantly simplify the interferometric stability, as well as feed-forward methods required in photon-based quantum logic circuitry.

Experiments on a compact and robust polarization-entangled photon source

We construct a compact polarization-entangled photon source using type-II degenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in beta-barium borate (BBO) crystal pumped by a 405 nm violet laser diode. In order to compensate the spatial displacement and the temporal delay due to the birefringence and dispersion effect of signal and idler photons, we make the down-converted photon pairs pass through a half wave plate and an additional BBO crystal with the half thickness of the original one. This improves the visibility of two-photon interference by eliminating the distinguishability of the paired photons. We measure the polarization correlations by two adjustable polarization analyzers in two conjugate bases, H/V and +45°/-45°, respectively. The polarization analyzer consists of a polarization beam splitter cube preceded by a rotatable half wave plate. When rotating one of the half wave plates and keeping the other one at fixed angle, we obtain the expected sin2 dependence of the coincidence counts. The highly visible sinusoidal coincidence indicates the violation of the Bell inequality and demonstrates the high quality of the polarization-entangled photon source. This compact polarization-entangled photon source is easily configurable and robust to demonstrate optical quantum information processing.
