Acceleration of revivals by squeezed vacuum fields

Abstract

The resonant interaction of A initially unexcited two-level atoms with different quantum fields in a high-Q single-mode cavity (Dicke model) is studied analytically in one of the limits in which the eigenvalues spectrum of the model may be assumed as equidistant. The time evolution of atomic inversion of a single two-level atom coupled to squeezed vacuum or thermal cavity fields (Jaynes-Cummings model) is irregular. Here we show that the dynamical response of the inversion of an assemblage of A two-level atoms to such fields may be regular, i.e., may reveal collapses and revivals and that the properties of the model with an initial squeezed vacuum field differ from those for coherent or thermal fields.

Squeezed vacuum as an accelerator of revivals in the Dicke model

M. Kozierowski, S. M. Chumakov

A two-level atom interacting with a single-mode squeezed vacuum cavity field does not manifest collapses and revivals of the oscillations [Milburn, Opt. Acta 31, 671 (1984)]. Here we show that the dynamic response of the inversion of an assemblage of A two-level atoms to such a field (Dicke model) may be qualitatively different. The dynamic properties of the model with an initial squeezed vacuum field differ from those for coherent or thermal fields, which have been stressed in the title.

Dicke model: quantum nonlinear dynamics and collective phenomena

S. M. Chumakov, M. Kozierowski

We study the resonant interaction of A initially unexcited two-level atoms with single-mode Fock, coherent and thermal cavity fields of arbitrary intensity. Two mechanisms lead to a spread of the eigenfrequencies: one is due to the photon-number distribution in the initial state and the other reflects the cooperativity of the system. Both affect the evolution of the photon number and photon statistics. We present approximate expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the system. Its regular dynamical regions are found and the difference in shape of the collapses and revivals connected with the above mechanisms is discussed.

Collective effects in the collapse-revival phenomenon and squeezing in the Dicke model

Guy Z. Ramon, Constantin Brif, A. Mann

Resonant interaction of a collection of two-level atoms with a single-mode coherent cavity field is considered in the framework of the Dicke model. We focus on the role of collective atomic effects in the phenomenon of collapses and revivals of the Rabi oscillations. It is shown that the behavior of the system strongly depends on the initial atomic state. In the case of the initial half-excited Dicke state we account for a number of interesting phenomena. The correlations between the atoms result in a suppression of the revival amplitude, and the revival time is halved, compared to the uncorrelated fully excited and ground states. The phenomenon of squeezing of the radiation field in the atom-field interaction is also discussed. For the initial fully excited and ground atomic states, the field is squeezed on the short-time scale, and squeezing can be enhanced by increasing the number of atoms. Some empirical formulas are found which describe the behavior of the system in excellent agreement with numerical results. For the half-excited Dicke state, the field can be strongly squeezed on the long-time scale in the case of two atoms. This kind of squeezing is enhanced by increasing the intensity of the initial coherent field and is of the same nature as revival-time squeezing in the Jaynes-Cummings model. The appearance of this long-time squeezing can be explained using the factorization approximation for semiclassical atomic states.

Glauber-Lachs version of the Jaynes-Cummings interaction of a two-level atom

M. Venkata Satyanarayana, M. Vijayakumar, P. M. Alsing

The dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings interaction of a two-level atom interacting with a single mode of a radiation field prepared in a Glauber-Lachs state is investigated to study the development of seemingly chaotic oscillations of the atomic inversion from a regular collapse-and-revival phenomenon, as the field statistics is changed from the coherent state to the thermal state. The effect of thermal photons on the coherent light is shown to be striking: Both the photon distribution as well as the atomic inversion are highly sensitive to even a very small addition of thermal photons to an initially coherent radiation field. We also compare the collapse and revival occurring in the micromaser case with the Glauber-Lachs version of the Jaynes-Cummings model.

Dynamics of a three-level atom in a two-mode squeezed vacuum

W. K. Lai, V. Buek, P. L. Knight

In this paper we study the dynamics of a three-level atom interacting with a two-mode squeezed vacuum, a highly correlated state in which each mode contains the same number of quanta yet exhibits a thermal photon distribution. Under exact resonance, the Rabi oscillations exhibit an irregular behavior reminiscent of those in the thermal-state Jaynes-Cummings model. If the individual field modes are sufficiently detuned from the intermediate atomic level, the Rabi oscillations become quasiperiodic. The three-level system in this case reduces to an effective two-level system in which two-photon processes dominate. The times of revivals of the Rabi oscillations in this limit depend only on the atom-field coupling constants and the detuning. For comparison, we present a parallel study of the case in which the initial field is prepared in an uncorrelated two-mode state, such as a two-mode thermal state or a two-mode coherent state. Under the full resonance condition, the former leads to an irregular evolution of the Rabi oscillations, while the latter leads to the usual collapse and revival phenomena. If the individual modes are sufficiently detuned from the intermediate atomic level, we observe the same quasiperiodicity of the Rabi oscillations as in the case of the two-mode squeezed vacuum but with a doubling of revival times (for equal atom-field coupling constants). Whereas the two-mode squeezed vacuum and the two-mode thermal-state transition dynamics lead to correlation between the field modes, the two-mode coherent state leads to anticorrelation (when sufficiently detuned from the intermediate atomic level).

Collapse and revivals in the Jaynes-Cummings model: An analysis based on the Mollow transformation

P. R. Berman, C. H. Raymond Ooi

Collapse and revivals in the Jaynes-Cummings model are studied within the context of the Mollow transformation for a single-mode coherent-state cavity field. The Mollow-transformed Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian has two atom-field terms, one corresponding to a classical field and the other to a quantized field driving the atomic transition. As such it maps onto the complementary problem of an atom in an optical cavity, whose field is initially in the vacuum state, driven by an external classical field. Both problems have the same atomic-state dynamics. It is shown that the revivals can be associated with two distinct properties of the quantized field of the transformed Hamiltonian. Revivals occurring at even (odd) multiples of the revival time are correlated with field states that are close to the initial field state and for which the average energy in the field is a minimum (maximum). Using semiclassical dressed states, we are able to map the problem for the field states onto one involving two uncoupled oscillators driven by off-resonant fields, provided effects related to dispersion are neglected. Analytic expressions for the photon number distribution of the transformed cavity field, including dispersion, are obtained for the even revival times.
