Method of successive approximations in the theory of stimulated Raman scattering of a randomly modulated pump

Abstract

Stimulated Raman scattering of a randomly modulated pump is investigated by the method of successive approximations. This involves expanding solutions in terms of small parameters, which are ratios of the correlation scales of random effects to other characteristic dynamic scales of the problem. Systems of closed equations are obtained for the moments of the amplitudes of the Stokes and pump waves and of the molecular vibrations. These describe the dynamics of the process allowing for changes in the pump intensity and statistics due to a three-wave interaction. By analyzing equations in higher-order approximations, it is possible to establish the conditions of validity of the first (Markov) and second approximations. In particular, it is found that these are valid for pump intensities JL both above and below the critical value Jcr near which the gain begins to increase rapidly and reproduction of the pump spectrum by the Stokes wave is initiated. Solutions are obtained for average intensities of the Stokes wave and molecular vibrations in the first approximation in a constant pump field. It is established that, for JLJcr, the Stokes wave undergoes rapid nonsteady-state amplification which is associated with an increase in the amplitude of the molecular vibrations. The results of the calculations show good agreement with known experimental data.

Quantum Theory of Stimulated Raman Effect

Kyoji Nishikawa, Fumihiko Takano

A photon theory of the stimulated Raman effect is developed. A system of coupled equations for the amplitudes of scattered photons and molecular vibrations are derived. The molecular vibration coordinates are then eliminated using the random phase approximation. The equations which result assume the form of coupled equations for the first Stokes and anti-Stokes lights. The secular equation which characterizes the solution of these coupled equations is shown to be equivalent to that of Shen and Bloembergen. Using this secular equation, the condition for temporal growth of the scattered lights is obtained and is compared with that for the spatial growth, which was obtained previously by Shen and Bloembergen. It is shown that both types of growth (temporal and spatial) proceed with comparable rates if the damping of the molecular vibration is large. If its damping is small, however, the temporal growth prevails over the spatial growth. Typical line-shape of the anti-Stokes line is obtained in the case of small damping. The result shows a strong directionality, as is the case of large damping.

Quantum statistics of the stimulated Raman effect

H D Simaan

The nonlinear process of the stimulated Raman effect is treated theoretically. Simple expressions are derived for the initial rates of change and limiting steady state values of the first two moments, the degrees of second-order coherence and the correlation function of the pump and Stokes beams. An analytical solution for the time dependence of the joint photon probability distribution of the two light beams is obtained and then employed to calculate some numerical results for various special cases of interest, and the significance of these results is discussed in physical terms. Simpler approximate expressions are also derived for the case where the pump beam is much more intense than the Stokes beam.

Theory of parametric and Raman interaction in an incoherent pumping field

Guerman A. Pasmanik, Gennadii I Freidman

An approximate theory of parametric amplification and stimulated Raman scattering is developed for a pumping field which is incoherent in terms of the transverse coordinates and time. Expressions are obtained for the increments of the average field and the conditions of validity of the obtained expressions are determined. It is shown, in particular, that if the longitudinal length of the correlation between the pump radiation and the signal wave is small in comparison with the length of correlation of this radiation with the idler wave, then the employed approximation describes with sufficient accuracy the transition from the case of δ-correlated pumping (incoherent interaction) to the case when the gain achieved in a distance equal to the correlation length of the pump and idler waves exceeds unity (quasicoherent interaction). The intensity increment is then close to double the increment of the average field or the signal wave. In addition, for the indicated ratio of the correlation lengths, it is relatively easy to calculate the correlation function at a distance from the point of entry into a crystal, which is short but sufficient for an appreciable gain. Analogous conclusions hold also for stimulated Raman scattering in a pumping field with a spectral width exceeding the spontaneous-scattering linewidth.

Theory of stimulated Raman scattering in a dispersive medium

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, E M Zemskov, V. K. Orlov

An analysis is made of the laws governing amplification of the Stokes wave in stimulated Raman scattering (STRS) in a dispersive medium for different models of wide-band pump radiation. An accurate solution of the STRS equations is obtained for pump radiation having a quadratically time-modulated phase. It is shown that for pump radiation for which the width of the instantaneous frequency spectrum is much less than the Raman scattering line width, the laws governing amplification of the Stokes wave differ substantially from those predicted by statistical STRS theory. Solutions of STRS equations in a dispersive medium are found for a model of temporally periodic pump radiation having a high intermode beat frequency.

Theory of amplification of the first Stokes component in a nonmonochromatic pump field under stimulated Raman scattering conditions

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, E M Zemskov, V I Chernen'kiĭ

A theoretical analysis is made of the problem of parallel amplification of the Stokes signal in a nonmonochromatic spatially inhomogeneous pump field in stimulated Raman scattering. Expressions are obtained for the spatial and temporal characteristics of the process of amplification of the Stokes signal. It is shown that in the course of amplification the slowly varying amplitude of the Stokes signal field becomes similar to the slowly varying amplitude of the pump field. The relationships obtained apply also, subject to certain restrictions, to other types of scattering.

Theory of transient stimulated Raman scattering and four-wave-mixing processes in multiple-pump systems: A Hamiltonian approach

Jui‐Teng Lin

A general theory of transient stimulated Raman scattering and the phase-matching diagrams are developed based on an interaction Hamiltonian which includes all the possible competing interaction channels. In a Raman system pumped by multiple crossing beams with multiple Stokes and anti-Stokes components, these channels are defined by the interactions among fields at different frequencies and/or k vectors of the pump pairs and Stokes and anti-Stokes fields. An ensemble-averaged equation of motion for the active phonon mode is derived within the Markovian approximation in which the phonon-phonon coupling (pressure effect) is reduced to an energy relaxation and a phase fluctuation. A complete set of transient coupled equations including phase modulation, Stark shift, medium (anharmonic) saturation, and all the possible four-wave-mixing channels is presented. In the transient regime, it is found that the effects of the Stark shift on the Raman efficiency are mainly governed by the input pump energy in contrast to the steady-state theory where the pump intensity plays the main role. Both analytic and numerical methods are developed in describing the nonlinear effects due to the energy feedback mechanism in the strong pump-depletion regime. Twelve possible four-wave-mixing channels are analyzed for nonlinear phase diagrams characterized by the angles among pump pairs, and Stokes and anti-Stokes fields. Finally, numerical examples are shown for the effects of the coherence lengths of high-order Stokes fields and pump pairs on the generation of low-order Stokes fields.
