Abstract

We report on electromagnetically induced transparency in a radio-frequency discharge of metastable helium atoms. We show that a large effect can be observed in spite of the discharge regime needed to produce the metastable helium and in spite of its Zeeman degeneracy. We discuss the mechanism and the conditions for the observation of such a phenomenon in a helium discharge.

Birefringence in electromagnetically induced transparency

Francesco Saverio Pavone, Giovanni Bianchini, F. S. Cataliotti +2 more

(4)He 2 (3)S(1) --> 2 (3)P transitions at 1083 nm were laser probed in the presence of radiation that coupled the 2 (3)P level with the 3 (3)S(1) level in a ladder scheme. The metastable helium that was used was produced in a rf discharge. Significant atomic birefringence was detected, in addition to complete electromagnetically induced transparency. A simple theoretical model explains the experimental results.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Absorption of A Monochromatic Light Controlled by a Radio Frequency Field

Xunming Cai

Electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption of a monochromatic light controlled by a radio frequency field in the cold multi-Zeeman-sublevel atoms are theoretically investigated. These Zeeman sublevels are coupled by a radio frequency (RF) field. Both electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption can be obtained by tuning the frequency of RF field for both the linear polarization and elliptical polarization monochromatic lights. When the transfer of coherence via spontaneous emission from the excited state to the ground state is considered, electromagnetically induced absorption can be changed into electromagnetically induced transparency with the change of intensity of radio field. The transparency windows controlled by the RF field can have potential applications in the magnetic-field measurement and quantum information processing.

Coherent population trapping in an rf-optical double resonance experiment in a neon discharge

Ахмеджанов Ринат Абдулхаевич, Lev Gushin, Alexander G. Litvak +2 more

We observed radio-frequency (rf) induced transparency for a probe optical field in an rf-optical double resonance experiment in a neon discharge. The origin of the transparency is coherent population trapping at Zeeman sublevels of the lower level of an optical transition of neon. Stokes and anti-Stokes optical fields were generated due to stimulated Raman scattering of both the radio-frequency field on the probe-induced optical coherence and the probe field on the Zeeman coherence.

Nonlinear optical generation in a hydrogen discharge

Dennis W. Tokaryk, G. Z. Zhang, Boris Peter Stoicheff

Sum-frequency generation with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been examined in a hydrogen discharge. EIT is demonstrated in the $3p\ensuremath{-}1s$ and $4p\ensuremath{-}1s$ transitions at 102.6 and 97.3 nm, respectively, with increased efficiency of generation arising from higher H-atom density, although competing effects due to the presence of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ distort the line shapes of these spectra. Only for shorter-wavelength transitions (such as $7p\ensuremath{-}1s$ and $8p\ensuremath{-}1s)$ that show very large shifts and distortions is there a decrease in intensity in comparison with generated radiation from H atoms external to the discharge.
