Generalized LDPC code with single-parity-check product constraints at super check nodes

Abstract

Due to the more complex constraints, generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes can achieve better error performance but require much higher decoding complexities compared with the standard LDPC codes. In this paper, single-parity-check product-codes (SPC-PCs) are considered as the constituent codes in the super check nodes of a GLDPC code. Moreover, turbo iterations are used in decoding the SPC-PCs. The error performance and the decoder complexity of the proposed GLDPC code are compared with other LDPC code and GLDPC code.

A class of doubly-generalized LDPC codes

Y. Min, Francis C. M. Lau, Chi Kong Tse

We propose a class of doubly-generalized LDPC (DGLDPC) codes that use single-parity-check (SPC) codes as component codes at the super-variable nodes (SVNs) and SPC product-codes (SPC-PCs) as component codes at the super-check nodes (SCNs). We propose a low-complexity iterative decoding algorithm catered for the special structures of the SPC-PCs. Finally, we present the error performance and the convergence rate of the proposed DGLDPC codes.

On the Design of Generalized LDPC Codes with Component BCJR Decoding

Yanfang Liu, Pablo M. Olmos, David G. M. Mitchell

Generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes, where the single parity-check (SPC) nodes are replaced by generalized constraint (GC) nodes, are known to offer a reduced gap to capacity when compared with conventional LDPC codes, while also maintaining linear growth of minimum distance. However, for certain classes of practical GLDPC codes, there remains a gap to capacity even when utilizing blockwise decoding algorithm at GC nodes. In this work, we propose to optimize the design of GLDPC codes where the GC nodes are decoded with a trellis-based bit-wise Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek- Raviv (BCJR) component decoding algorithm. We analyze the asymptotic threshold behavior of GLDPC codes and determine the optimal proportion of the GC nodes in the GLDPC Tanner graph. We show significant performance improvements compared to existing designs with the same order of decoding complexity.

Generalized LDPC codes and generalized stopping sets

N. Miladinovic, M.P.C. Fossorier

A generalized low-density parity check code (GLDPC) is a low-density parity check code in which the constraint nodes of the code graph are block codes, rather than single parity checks. In this paper, we study GLDPC codes which have BCH or Reed-Solomon codes as subcodes under bounded distance decoding (BDD). The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated in the limit case of an infinite length (cycle free) code used over a binary erasure channel (BEC) and the corresponding thresholds for iterative decoding are derived. The performance of the proposed scheme for finite code lengths over a BEC is investigated as well. Structures responsible for decoding failures are defined and a theoretical analysis over the ensemble of GLDPC codes which yields exact bit and block error rates of the ensemble average is derived. Unfortunately this study shows that GLDPC codes do not compare favorably with their LDPC counterpart over the BEC. Fortunately, it is also shown that under certain conditions, objects identified in the analysis of GLDPC codes over a BEC and the corresponding theoretical results remain useful to derive tight lower bounds on the performance of GLDPC codes over a binary symmetric channel (BSC). Simulation results show that the proposed method yields competitive performance with a good decoding complexity trade-off for the BSC.

Generalized LDPC Codes With Low-Complexity Decoding and Fast Convergence

Dawit Simegn, Dmitry Artemasov, Kirill Andreev +2 more

We consider generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes with component codes that are duals of Cordaro–Wagner codes. Two efficient decoding algorithms are proposed: one based on Hartmann–Rudolph processing, analogous to Sum-Product decoding, and another based on evaluating two hypotheses per bit, referred to as the Min-Sum decoder. Both algorithms are derived using latent variables and a appropriate message-passing schedule. A quantized, protograph-based density evolution procedure is used to optimize GLDPC codes for Min-Sum decoding. Compared to 5G LDPC codes, the proposed GLDPC codes offer similar performance at 50 iterations and significantly better convergence and performance at 10 iterations.

Check-hybrid GLDPC codes: Systematic elimination of trapping sets by super checks

Vida Ravanmehr, David Declercq, Bane V. Vasic

In this paper, we propose a new approach to constructing a class of check-hybrid generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes which are free of small trapping sets. This approach is based on converting selected checks of an LDPC code involving a trapping set to super checks corresponding to a shorter error correcting component code. In particular, we follow two goals in constructing the check-hybrid GLDPC codes: First, the super checks are replaced based on the knowledge of trapping sets of the global LDPC code. We show that by converting only some single checks to super checks the decoder corrects the errors on a trapping set and hence eliminates the trapping set. Second, the number of super checks required for eliminating certain trapping sets is minimized to reduce the rate-loss. We first give an algorithm to find a set of critical checks in a trapping set of an LDPC code and then we provide some upper bounds on the minimum number of critical checks needed to eliminate certain trapping sets in the parity-check matrix of an LDPC code. A possible fixed set for a class of check-hybrid codes is also given.

Irregular Generalized LDPC codes in Practical Communication Scenarios

Irina E. Bocharova, Boris D. Kudryashov, Sander Mikelsaar

High-rate irregular Generalized LDPC (GLDPC) codes with low-complexity constituent codes are studied. The main area of focus is the optimization of the underlying irregular binary LDPC codes and their matching with constituent codes. Finite length random coding bound on the maximum-likelihood decoding error probability of a random ensemble of irregular GLDPC codes is derived and compared with a similar bound for non-binary (NB) LDPC codes over small alphabets.A new algorithm for assigning columns of the parity-check matrix of a constituent code to nonzero elements of a base matrix of the quasi-cyclic (QC)-GLDPC code is presented. Examples of the constructed QC-GLDPC codes are given. The simulation results for frame error rate (FER) performance of the belief-propagation (BP) decoding for the QC-GLDPC codes are presented and compared with the same performance of NB QC-LDPC codes over small alphabets and binary LDPC codes in the WiFi and 5G standards. Both GLDPC codes and NB LDPC codes with sufficiently low decoding complexity are shown to outperform their binary LDPC counterparts, while GLDPC codes appear to be more advantageous in terms of decoding complexity.
