Abstract

Gradient corrections to the local density approximation are formulated for the density and the gap function in case of a spin-1/2 Fermi gas at unitarity. The related new universal numbers are calculated within the framework of the mean-field BCS model.

Gradient corrections to the local-density approximation for trapped superfluid Fermi gases

András Csordás, O. Almásy, P. Szépfalusy

Two species superfluid Fermi gas is investigated on the BCS side up to the Feshbach resonance. Using the Greens's function technique gradient corrections are calculated to the generalized Thomas-Fermi theory including Cooper pairing. Their relative magnitude is found to be measured by the small parameter $(d/{R}_{\mathrm{TF}}){}^{4}$, where $d$ is the oscillator length of the trap potential and ${R}_{\mathrm{TF}}$ is the radial extension of the density $n$ in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. In particular, at the Feshbach resonance the universal corrections to the local density approximation are calculated and a universal prefactor ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{W}=7/27$ is derived for the von Weizs\"acker--type correction ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{W}(\ensuremath{\hbar}{}^{2}/2m)({\ensuremath{\nabla}}^{2}{n}^{1/2}/{n}^{1/2})$.

Superfluidity of an Atomic Fermi Gas near the Unitarity Limit

de S Palo, M. L. Chiofalo, MJ Holland +1 more

We show that the thermodynamic properties of an atomic Fermi gas near the unitarity limit for Feshbach scattering is not universal as long as the resonance is narrow on the scale of the Fermi energy. In view of ongoing quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we explore this behavior within a mean-field approach extended to a finite temperature by means of a model potential, which allows for a tuning of the scattering phase shift and its energy dependence. Our results may be relevant for constructing a complete theoretical description of the crossover from a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of composite bosons to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) of Cooper pairs.

Bosons and fermions near Feshbach resonances

Henning Heiselberg

Near Feshbach resonances, n | a | 3 ≫ 1, systems of Bose and Fermi particles become strongly interacting/dense. In this unitary limit both bosons and fermions have very different properties than in a dilute gas, e.g., the energy per particle approaches a value ℏ 2 n 2/3 / m times a universal many-body constant. Calculations based upon an approximate Jastrow wavefunction can quantitatively describe recent measurements of trapped Bose and Fermi atoms near Feshbach resonances. The pairing gap between attractive fermions also scales as Δ ∼ ℏ 2 n 2/3 / m near Feshbach resonances and is a large fraction of the Fermi energy—promising for observing BCS superfluidity in traps. Pairing undergoes several transitions depending on interaction strength and the number of particles in the trap and can also be compared with pairing in nuclei.

Mean-field thermodynamics of a spin-polarized spherically trapped Fermi gas at unitarity

Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu, P. D. Drummond

We calculate the mean-field thermodynamics of a spherically trapped Fermi gas with unequal spin populations in the unitarity limit, comparing results from the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations and the local density approximation. We follow the usual mean-field decoupling in deriving the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations and set up an efficient and accurate method for solving these equations. In the local density approximation we consider locally homogeneous solutions, with a slowly varying order parameter. With a large particle number these two approximation schemes give rise to essentially the same results for various thermodynamic quantities, including the density profiles. This excellent agreement strongly indicates that the small oscillation of order parameters near the edge of trap, sometimes interpreted as spatially inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states in previous studies of Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations, is a finite-size effect. We find that a bimodal structure emerges in the density profile of the minority-spin state at finite temperature, as observed in experiments. The superfluid transition temperature as a function of the population imbalance is determined and is shown to be consistent with recent experimental measurements. The temperature dependence of the equation of state is discussed.

Two species superfluid Fermi gas is investigated on the BCS side up to the Feshbach resonance. Using the Greens's function technique gradient corrections are calculated to the generalized Thomas-Fermi theory including Cooper pairing. Their relative magnitude is found to be measured by the small parameter (d/RTF)4(d/{R}_{\mathrm{TF}}){}^{4}(d/RTF)4, where ddd is the oscillator length of the trap potential and RTF{R}_{\mathrm{TF}}RTF is the radial extension of the density nnn in the Thomas-Fermi approximation.
