Stark broadening of potassium lines

Abstract

Recently published Stark broadening data of potassium ns-4p and nd-4p lines have been reexamined. Newly derived data are compared with theoretical results obtained from a simple approximative formula. The experiment agrees with theoretical results, in average, within \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}20%.

Stark Effects in Line Broadening

Henry Margenau, M LEWIS

Earlier calculations, based on customary radiation theory, fail to yield a meaningful finite answer for the second-order Stark effect upon line broadening. The reason for this occurrence is found in the assumption that, at some definite time, the radiating atom as well as the perturbing electron is in a precise energy state. When the electron is represented in a suitable way by a wave packet a finite line width results, and this answer agrees within reasonable limits with that of the classical impact theory provided certain enumerated conditions are satisfied.

Hybrid two-photon transitions in alkali-metal potassium vapor

Z. Hang

We have measured the resonant ionization spectrum of alkali-metal potassium vapor in the range of 5780 A - 5920 A, using a flashlamp pumped tunable dye laser. The results show that the two-photon transitions of atomic potassium 4s-ns (n=12-18), 4s-nd(n=10-16) and stronger atomic potassium 4p-7s, 4p-5d transitions have been obtained. These ionization signals of 4p-7s, 4p-5d transitions are produced from potassium dimer-potassium atom hybrid two-photo transitions. We have discussed the results.
