TWO-PHOTON OPTICAL MULTISTABILITY THEORY

Li Fu-Li, 中国科学技术大学物理系

The theory of the optical multistability by two-photon resonant interaction is investigated. The nonlinear medium inside a Fabry-Perot cavity is in two-photon resonance with the laser beam. The two-photon equation of state including dynamical Stark shift and relaxation parameters is obtained and studied under mean-field approximation. The equations for both Fabry-Perot cavity and ring cavity take basically the same form. The physics mechanisms resulting in optical multistability are also studied. It has been shown that the combined effects of Kerr switching and saturation absorption switching can lead to two-photon optical double-bistability, tristability as well as bistability. Furthermore, the criterion conditions under which double-bistability or tristability can occur are given and discussed. Finally, the phase-conjugated reflectivity by two-photon four-wave mixing is also shown to exhibit multistability as well as hysteresis.

Optical multistability in collinear degenerate four-wave mixing

Richard S. Lytel

The theory of collinear degenerate four-wave mixing in a lossless, isotropic Kerr medium is described and solved numerically. Multiple solutions to the equations governing the spatial evolution of the probe and signal fluxes are found when the input fluxes exceed a critical intensity determined by the electric susceptibility and the interaction length of the medium. This treatment includes all phase-matched contributions to the equations of motion of all fields, including the cross-coupled waves appearing in the collinear geometry.

Optical multistability and phase conjugation fidelity in a high-birefringence optical fiber

S. Trillo, Stefan W. Wabnitz

We derive an exact solution including pump depletion of collinear four-wave mixing in a birefringent Kerr medium. We find mirrorless optical multistability for a linearly polarized backscattered signal with orthogonal pumps at cw power levels using a few meters of polarization-maintaining silica fiber. An expression for the nonlinear phase distortion of ideal phase conjugation is obtained, showing a fundamental limitation to generating time-reversed wave fronts using Kerr nonlinearity.
