Population transfer at periodically repeated level crossings

Abstract

We have explored a genuinely time-dependent problem consisting of periodic crossings of energy levels. The model can be realized in several physical systems, but we refer it explicitly to a two-level ion that swings in a harmonic trap and concurrently interacts with a traveling light wave. We have solved the Schr\"odinger equation for this model by numerical integration as well as by the use of matrix continued fractions for the steady state. We investigate both the time and the frequency behavior of the model. We have also compared the exact behavior with an intuitive model based on a Landau-Zener description of each crossing followed by a simple relaxation behavior. In addition, the coherent interaction with the field is found to lead to a resonancelike behavior of the population transfer, which we can attribute to the accumulated phase of the Bloch vector. The various time scales of the problem are identified and their physical significance is elucidated.

Population dynamics and phase effects in periodic level crossings

B. M. Garraway, Nikolay V. Vitanov

We present an analytic study of the population dynamics of a two-state system interacting with an external field and subjected to periodic level crossings. We apply an evolution matrix approach to calculate the excited-state population at the crossings (the nodes) and at the antinodes. The results are expressed in terms of only two parameters: the transition probability p for a quarter period from a crossing to an antinode, and the transition probability P for a half period between two successive crossings. We find that the values of the excited-state population at the antinodes can form global (gross) structures. We show that these structures and the population dynamics as a whole are very sensitive to the initial phase \ensuremath{\varphi} of the frequency-modulated field, particularly in the limits \ensuremath{\varphi}=0 (cosine modulation) and \ensuremath{\varphi}=\ensuremath{\pi}/2 (sine modulation). We calculate the parameters p and P by using two analytic approaches: one based on the original Landau-Zener model, and the other based on the finite Landau-Zener model. Both approaches unexpectedly lead to the same results. The notion of the global structures and the relevant parametrization in terms of p and P allow us to find various distinctive cases of population dynamics, such as population swapping, completely periodic evolution, superpositional trapping, and stepwise evolution.

Periodic motion around the crossing point in a two-level system

J.-M. Lopez-Castillo, Abdelali Filali-Mouhim, Jean‐Paul Jay‐Gerin

We study a two-level system described by a Hamiltonian which exhibits a time-periodic variation of its diagonal matrix elements in the small coupling regime. We investigate the transition probability, the Bloch–Siegert shift, and the Rabi frequency of the multiquantum transition as functions of the amplitude and frequency of the oscillations. These quantities all exhibit a very distinct behavior depending upon whether or not the amplitude of the oscillations allows for the crossing of the levels. This behavior is monotonic for small amplitudes while it presents oscillations as a function of the frequency for larger amplitudes. These oscillations are unambiguously attributed to the Landau–Zener–Stueckelberg interference effects between the crossing point and the turning point. A discussion of the relevance of these oscillations to possible experimental observations, notably in electron-transfer reactions, is presented.

Level crossings in a cavity QED model

Jonas Larson

In this paper I study the dynamics of a two-level atom interacting with a standing-wave field. When the atom is subjected to a weak linear force, the problem can be turned into a time-dependent one, and the evolution is understood from the band structure of the spectrum. The presence of level crossings in the spectrum gives rise to Bloch oscillations of the atomic motion. Here I investigate the effects of the atom-field detuning parameter. A variety of different level crossings are obtained by changing the magnitude of the detuning, and the behavior of the atomic motion is strongly affected due to this. I also consider the situation in which the detuning is oscillating in time, and its impact on the atomic motion. Wave-packet simulations of the full problem are treated numerically and the results are compared with analytical solutions given by the standard Landau-Zener and the three-level Landau-Zener models.

Landau-Zener transitions in a level-crossing system with periodic modulations of the diagonal energy

Yōsuke Kayanuma, Y. Mizumoto

We clarify some aspects of population dynamics of a level-crossing system, in which a periodic modulation of the relative energy is superimposed on the energy change with a constant velocity. For moderate values of the off-diagonal coupling, the temporal evolution of the system is well described by a transfer-matrix formalism. It is shown that the existence probability on one level shows a series of steplike changes both in the high-frequecy limit and the low-frequency limit of the periodic modulation, reflecting the quasiquantization of the oscillating field in the former case, while reflecting the multiple real crossings in the latter case.

Analysis of Oscillation of Population Probability in the Two-level System by Bloch Vector

Zhang Guoqian

The time evolution of population probability in two-level system under a linear frequency-chirped field is studied by mean of the density matrix equation of motion when the decay of the excited state is considered, and the physical mechanism of the oscillation in the process of the population transfer is analyzed using the dynamic evolution process of the Bloch vector under the picture of Bloch vector model. The result shows that the phenomenon of oscillation in the two-level system reveals the dynamic conversion transfer among population transfer, dispersion and absorption.

On the generalized Landau-Zener problem

V. L. Pokrovsky, Nikolai A. Sinitsyn

During the adiabatic time evolution levels crossing violates the adiabaticity and makes transitions between levels possible. Conventionally only two energy levels cross simultaneously. The transition probabilities for this case were found by Landau and Zener. However, the multilevel crossing happens systematically rather than occasionally if the Hamiltonian possesses a special symmetry. The simplest physical realization of the multilevel crossing are the Zeeman multiplet in a varying magnetic field and an electron in one-dimensional chain driven by the time-dependent electric field. We present asymptotics of the transition amplitudes for these kinds of the multilevel crossing. They are based on an exact solution for a model n-state, time-dependent Schrödinger equation.
