Abstract

We investigate the storage and retrieval of a weak signal pulse in a medium composed of $N \ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type three-level atoms in thermal motion. Both atomic internal and translational degrees of freedom are treated quantum mechanically, based on which momentum families that are closed with respect to the action of the interaction Hamiltonian are defined. We introduce momentum-dependent collective atomic density operators by sorting the atoms into groups according to their momenta and establish Heisenberg equations for these atomic operators and the signal field. Because of the thermal-motion-dependent dephasing effect in the establishment of electromagnetically induced transparency of the medium, the efficiency of transfer between the signal pulse and the medium is reduced. The numerical simulations show that the performance of the scheme can be improved by applying the copropagation configuration of the light fields and preparing the atoms initially with a small width of the thermal momentum distribution, which is assumed to be the Gaussian function, or in the state where the Raman-Nath approximation is tenable.

Investigation of a simplified model of storage and retrieval of light in a thermal atomic system

We investigate the storage and retrieval of a weak signal light in a thermal Λ type three-level atomic system. We examine in detail the time-dependent aspect of this system in which atomic motion with both internal and translational degrees of freedom is taken into consideration under different conditions of the atomic momentum distributions and the settings of two light fields. We confirm the effectiveness of a Doppler-free copropagating configuration in promoting the efficiency of the system operation.

Electromagnetically induced transparency of the medium composed of atoms in thermal motion

Tianhui Qiu, Guojian Yang

We investigate electromagnetically induced transparency of a medium composed of N Λ-type three-level atoms in thermal motion with an initial momentum distribution modelled by a Gaussian function. We treat atomic centre-of-mass motion as an independent degree of freedom and study the dependence of susceptibility on the thermal motion characterized by the width and centre of Gaussian momentum distribution. A larger width does not always lead to larger resonant absorption and if the probe and controlling fields copropagate in the degenerate and resonant cases, transparency can be obtained regardless of the thermal motion of the atoms.

Reversible storage of a weak light pulse optimized by spontaneously generated coherence

Tianhui Qiu, Hongyang Ma, Chunhong Zheng +1 more

We investigate the storage and retrieval of a weak light pulse in a Λ-type three-level atomic gas medium with spontaneously generated coherence and pumped by an incoherent field. The scheme works based on electromagnetically induced transparency and can promote retrieval efficiency. We show how to make the combination choice of the system parameters required not only for the perfect retrieval operation but also for the high atom-field coupling efficiency.

Reversible storage of photon entanglement in thermal atomic ensembles

Tianhui Qiu, Guojian Yang, Min Xie

We investigate the storage and retrieval of photon entanglement based on electromagnetically induced transparency where atomic thermal motion cannot be neglected. The reversible transfer of entanglement between atomic ensembles and photon modes is described in terms of the dark state generalized to a mixture of entangled collective moving atoms and entangled photon modes. We analyze the retrieval ability of photon entanglement from atomic ensembles with inhomogeneous broadening and find that the scheme in the degenerated and resonant light–atom configuration is almost immune to atomic thermal motion.

An effective thermal-parametrization theory for the slow-light dynamics in a Doppler-broadened electromagnetically induced transparency medium

Shih-Wei Su, Yi-Hsin Chen, Shih-Chuan Gou +1 more

We model the effects of the atomic thermal motion on the propagation of a light pulse in an electromagnetically induced transparency medium by introducing a set of effectively temperature-dependent parameters, including the Rabi frequency of the coupling field, optical density and relaxation rate of the ground state coherence, into the governing equations. The validity of this effective theory is verified by the close agreement between the theoretical results and the experimental data.

Effects of detuning on the storage of a light pulse in an ultracold atomic medium

黄善国 Huang Shanguo, Gu Wan-Yi, Haiqiang Ma +1 more

Theoretical analysis and a full numerical simulation of the electromagnet ically induced transparency model are performed under detuning conditions for a closed three_level ultracold atomic system in which a signal field can be stored and retrieved. Numerical results confirm the theory that the system can be prep ared in dark states only under resonant conditions between the fields and the a tomic transitions. The signal field is partially stored in the ultracold atomic medium with the increase of detuning and an enhanced negative group velocity of t he physically vanishing signal pulse appears. In the case of a symmetrical detun ing (red or blue detuning), no remarkable changes of the storage process occur.
