‘‘Confinement’’ in the one-dimensional Hubbard model: Irrelevance of single-particle hopping

Abstract

We demonstrate, by direct use of the asymptotic Green's functions of Korepin and Ren, that the one-dimensional repulsive U Hubbard model has the property of ``confinement,'' in that weak interchain coupling does not cause coherent particle motion in the transverse direction at absolute zero. Implications for real one-dimensional systems and for the two-dimensional Hubbard model are discussed.

One-particle interchain hopping in coupled Hubbard chains

Didier Poilblanc, H. Endres, Frédéric Mila +3 more

Interchain hopping in systems of coupled chains of correlated electrons is investigated by exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo methods. For two weakly coupled Hubbard chains at commensurate densities (e.g., n=1/3), the splitting at the Fermi level between bonding and antibonding bands is strongly reduced (but not suppressed) by repulsive interactions extending to a few lattice spacings. The magnitude of this reduction is directly connected to the exponent \ensuremath{\alpha} of the one-dimensional Luttinger liquid. However, we show that the incoherent part of the single-particle spectral function is much less affected by the interchain coupling. This suggests that incoherent interchain hopping could occur for intermediate \ensuremath{\alpha} values. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Confinement and transverse conductivity in coupled Luttinger liquids

Sylvain Capponi, Didier Poilblanc, Frédéric Mila

One-particle interchain hopping in a system of coupled Luttinger liquids is investigated using exact diagonalizations techniques. First, the two-chain problem of spinless fermions is studied in order to see the behavior of the band splitting as a function of the exponent $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ which characterizes the one-dimensional (1D) Luttinger liquid. Moderate intrachain interactions can lead to a strong reduction of this splitting. The onset of the confinement within the individual chains (defined by a vanishing splitting) seems to be governed by $\ensuremath{\alpha}$. We give numerical evidence that interchain coherent hopping can be totally suppressed for $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\sim}0.4$ or even smaller $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ values. The transverse conductivity is shown to exhibit a strong incoherent part. Even when coherent interchain hopping is believed to occur (at small $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ values), it is shown that the coherent Drude weight is always significantly smaller than the incoherent weight. Implications for the optical experiments in quasi-1D organic or high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors are outlined.

Properties of One-Particle Excitation for Two-Chain Tomonaga–Luttinger Model

Ken Yokoyama

The one-particle Green's function for the two-chain Tomonaga–Luttinger (TL) model coupled by interchain hopping including spin degrees of freedom is calculated as a function of distance and time by the higher-dimensional bosonization method. In the short distance and time region, the one-dimensional TL liquid behavior is reproduced, while the long distance and time behavior is different from that for either TL or Fermi liquid. As the interaction becomes stronger, the behavior of Green's function becomes closer to that for the one-dimensional TL liquid, showing that the one-dimensionality is enhanced for stronger electron interaction, and is interpreted as the precursor of the “confinement”.

Weakly coupled Hubbard chains at half-filling and confinement

Karyn Le Hur

We study two (very) weakly coupled Hubbard chains in the half-filled case, and especially the situation where the intrachain Mott scale m is much larger than the (bare) single-electron interchain hopping ${t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}.$ First, we find that the divergence of the intrachain umklapp channel at the Mott transition results in the complete vanishing of the single-electron interchain hopping: this is significant of a strong confinement of coherence along the chains. Excitations are usual charge fermionic solitons and spinon-(anti)spinon pairs of the Heisenberg chain. Then, we show rigorously how the tunneling of spinon-(anti)spinon pairs produces an antiferromagnetic interchain exchange of the order of ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}{=t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}^{2}/m.$ In the ``confined'' phase and in the far infrared, the system behaves as a pure spin ladder. The final result is an insulating ground state with spin-gapped excitations exactly as in the opposite ``delocalized'' limit (i.e., for rather large interchain hoppings) where the two-leg ladder is in the well-known insulating $D\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{Mott}$ phase. Unlike materials with an infinite number of coupled chains (Bechgaard salts), the confinement/deconfinement transition at absolute zero is here a simple crossover: no metallic phase is found in undoped two-leg ladders. This statement might be generalized for N-leg ladders with $N=3,4,\dots{}$ (but not too large).

Confinement in weakly-coupled double Hubbard chains, at half-filling

Strong-coupling phases of two Hubbard chains with interchain hopping

Michele Fabrizio, Alberto Parola, Erio Tosatti

The T=0 phase diagram for two Hubbard chains with interchain hopping ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ and on-site repulsion U is derived within a renormalization-group (RG) approach. We explicitly allow for renormalization of the Fermi momenta. A nonzero ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ drives the chains towards strong coupling, and only for large ${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ is a Luttinger liquid recovered. By use of weak-coupling RG, a qualitative picture of the phase diagram can be obtained. Our calculations show two different strong-coupling regimes: one with nonvanishing effective interchain hopping (〈${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$〉\ensuremath{\ne}0), not confining, for small U, and another with 〈${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$〉=0, confining, for large U. Numerical diagonalizations for a small cluster support the RG results.
