Exciton–Light Coupling in Quantum Wells in the Presence of Inhomogeneous Broadening

Alexey Vitalievich Kavokin, Maria R. Vladimirova, Lucio Claudio Andreani +2 more

Maxwell equations for light incident on a quantum well at the exciton resonance frequency have been solved taking into account the inhomogeneous broadening of the exciton resonance. Inhomogeneous and homogeneous mechanisms of broadening can be easily distinguished in time-resolved reflection or transmission spectra where the inhomogeneous broadening causes Gaussian-like decay of the signal and oscillations. Experimentally predicted nonmonotonic time-resolved signal in transmission has been detected in a system of five GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells.

Slow light using semiconductor quantum dots

Jungho Kim, S. L. Chuang, C. C. Kuo +1 more

A variable semiconductor optical buffer based on the electromagnetically induced transparency in a quantum dot waveguide is theoretically investigated with feasible parameters for applications to a 40 Gbps optical network. We show the refractive index and absorption spectra of the quantum dot waveguide at various pump levels, which exhibit an optimal pump power for maximum slow-down factor, in agreement with the previous experimental observation using a Pr-doped solid. The group velocity slow-down factor is theoretically analysed as a function of the pump intensity at different broadened linewidths. Inhomogeneous broadening in self-assembled quantum dots degrades the slow-down factor. In order to reduce the inhomogeneous broadening effects, we propose to use a resonant microcavity structure with quantum dots embedded in the active layer to enhance the slow-down factor.

Superradiation in a Medium Consisting of Two Ultra-Thin Layers, Considering the Influence of Homogeneous and Inhomogeneous Spectral Line Broadening

I. I. Ryzhov, E. S. Kovyneva, A. M. Devyatkov

Abstract In a semiclassical approach, we investigate the superradiation of two parallel ultra-thin layers doped with active centers exhibiting Λ-scheme operation transitions in an absorbing medium. The initial population of the upper state of the active centers varies from full inversion to inversion-less superradiation regimes. We demonstrate the resonant influence of interlayer interference of counterpropagating waves on the intensity dynamics of the fields emitted from the bilayer system, depending on the phase factor characterizing the distance between the layers. In this model, both relaxation processes associated with homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening of the spectral lines of the active centers are taken into account.
